Great article! I've known one of my good friends for 40 years this year - we met on our first day of high school back last century. Time for a catch up I think.

Loved the article - thanks for sharing.
I had a dinner last night - 3 "new" friends (women I have met since moving here, not quite BFF but very close friends) and my niece, who just turned 40 last week. She is moving to my new city and had a really lousy birthday last week. I wanted to celebrate her a bit, and have her know that she isn't alone in starting over at this age. All of us have moved to this city and are making lives as single women, and doing pretty damn well at it!
We need to keep the women friends in our lives, and make that circle grow a bit at times. Like we do here!

This was difficult for me to read right now but very much worth it. My friends have been indispensable. I've been through long stretches feeling like I didn't have a friend in the world. Now I don't know what I would do without my girls.
Just in the past few weeks I started writing on my best friends' Facebook walls, letting them and their friends know how much they mean to me, the value they add to my life., and what I appreciate about them. Those who are not on Facebook will get a card.
A text letting them know you're thinking of them, or picking up their favorite candy bar, will brighten a friend's day.
Let them know what they mean to you while they're here. Don't wait for the funeral.

I have some wonderful friends that I hate to think about them not being here. All are very long term friends 32+ years for the 'newest' friend and 46 for the oldest.
They are are all very good friends but I think they offer me different things at different times of my life and while we have all mixed together on occasions over that past 40 years there seems no jealousy among us. Our partners are also very good friends with DH standing as best man for one of them.
I have newer friendships that I have established since retiring but this is really more of a social connection - it is my Tuesday morning craft group - I have great admiration for these ladies and we seem to be able to talk to each other about all kinds of things that maybe we would not talk to anyone else about. I hate missing the morning group.

I dread the days when my two closest friends pass away, and I selfishly hope it will be me before them. One has been in my life since we were in elementary school, before we even had our periods.
Two Pooh quotes come to mind.
"If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day, so I never have to live without you."
and
"How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard."
