Grrr. Check your accounts daily. That's my only advice.I thought every couple of days would be good enough, clearly not.
Be careful out there. CriminalS suck.

It is a federal law that there can only be 6 transfers per month from savings to checking unless it is from your bank itself. This includes online. So once it reaches 6 transfers the purchases are declined by the bank even if there is money in the account. So they must have been taking large amounts each time.

Like if you decided to check your bank account after reading this. LOL Lol. The reason I was checking so "frequently" was because of the pea who said her dh was mad at her about their acct. So if not for her lord knows when I would have done more than glance at it. We have been bad about really looking daily and just every couple of weeks when we go over the budget on pay day. Lesson learned. It's a huge mess to clean up.

Reading this thread makes me hyperventilate a bit. Kinda makes me want to bury cash in my back yard. BUT I WON'T.

That really sucks. My CU won't keep transferring after those 6 transfers. Also their fraud alert kicks in after 1-2 transactions out of state. Learned that when we forget to tell them we were travelling.
Going forward you could probably put a fraud alert on your account (I know that doesn't help with unauthorized uses in state) and maybe change how many transfers they will allow. Glad they are giving you your money back right away, what a hassle!
My DS has a prepaid Visa card that got skimmed and the thieves tested it and then tried to run a bunch of transactions on it for over $800. He less than $25 on it then it triggered a automatic transfer (I have it set up for him when his funds get low) of $75. So luckily none of the charges went through.

Yep, that's one reason why we decided not to have overdraft protection out of our main savings to our checking account, nor is my debit card at all linked to my savings account. Can't do ATM transactions with savings either. But I can do transfers online and do keep a small savings amount in checking.
I highly advise against overdraft protection using savings personally, plus they do hit you with that "small" fee each time rather then the higher NSF and merchant fees. Or have a smaller savings account for overdraft.

That sucks. We now have our accounts (we have individual and joint accounts) set up so we get an email or text with our balance every day. And set so that there isn't overdraft protection/automatic transfer from saving etc.
Those thieves just make everything more difficult when it comes to banking.

Glad they covered it! I also do text alerts on my savings account, knowing we don't do many withdrawals.

I have this alert set up as well. We also have it set up that when the account drops below a certain amount, I get an alert. I can then choose whether to transfer money vs the bank making that decision.

So sorry, I have been hearing a lot on the news lately about skimmers getting more sophisticated and are more to fear then hackers.
Definitely check the ATM part of the machine to make sure it doesn't move. And cover the keypad with your hand. No need to worry about strangers over you shoulder it's the cameras above the ATM machines that can capture the pin..so use you hand or piece of paper while you pin in your number. These skimmers can be at a bank so don't even trust your bank or just go inside and do it the old fashioned way. I have noticed Citibank has a few branches that put their machines inside and requires you to swipe your card to get into the bank lobby itself, wonder if that's going to be the future of ATMs in general.

So once it reaches 6 transfers the purchases are declined by the bank even if there is money in the account. So they must have been taking large amounts each time. It depends on what kind of account it is; this isn't necessarily true. Some accounts that people consider savings accounts aren't subject to Reg D at all. For accounts that are, there is no mandate that the transfers have to be declined after beyond six. Some banks charge excess transaction fees, some banks automatically convert the accounts to accounts not subject to Reg D, and some banks may decline (though I would wager that's a relatively small number of them). Sorry you're dealing with this, OP. What a PITA.

Thanks for the info - just went and checked our accounts - I try to do it every couple of days because we were taken several years ago and certainly don't want that to happen again.

That's not somethign I had heard of before though, so thanks for telling me about it.

Shoot. I don't often cover my hand when I enter my pin, will be doing that for sure now. Man, people suck. I cannot fathom the type of person who has no issue with this type of thing. You know that once my card is declined they will just move along to the next card they stole. And nothing will ever happen to these people.

Like if you decided to check your bank account after reading this. LOL Raises hand!!! And then thought, "Oh, crap, it's lower than it should be." Then forgot it was the 15th and it's car payment day. D'oh! Thieves suck!!!! It's such an epidemic, I just don't know how they keep the skimmers from happening.

That sounds scary and I am glad the bank is fixing it!
I had a slight panic attack last week. I checked my account and it was a negative. I freaked out, but it was my fault. I mailed a bill too soon and it cleared the day before payday. I have NEVER done that. I was happy it was my fault and pissed because it was stupid me.

That really sucks. I love my bank, if there are purchases made out of state, they call us! Seriously, this has *always* been the case for us. Once in Disneyland they froze our account. After that we went in in person before traveling to notify them in advance. When we moved, they called us when we made our first purchase outside of Arizona. So what the hell happened here? We have no clue. So word to the wise, don't rely on that system working every time.

I get a text anytime an amount over $X is taken out of my account. I set the amount. Is there a way you can get that too? I use this feature with my bank and I have the amount set to .01 so that anytime a transaction clears over a penny...I get a text. I usually get a text within a few seconds of the transaction going through. If I am not the one using the card then I know that my account has been hacked.
