The dark sky preserve?
I am trying to plan a camping trip and I'm really confused about the procedure for getting a spot on the observatory field. So if you've been there, done that - could you please explain the process in plain English because the DCNR site is worthless.

My experience is five years old, so take it for what it's worth. I camped in a tent on the ground in the astronomy field. We didn't have reservations, just pulled up that afternoon, picked a spot in the field, and set up. I think we paid a nominal fee to a park ranger type. Reserve America - Cherry Springs The above website seems to have good information. Be sure to read under "Alerts and important information." But you have to make a reservation if you are wanting to rent an observatory shelter. That you would have to reserve by calling the Project Office: (814)435-5010 I suggest that you have bear spray with you. Potter country truly is bear country. I personally saw them several times. They are attracted to all the food people bring.
