Original post: A few weeks ago I noticed that my clean dishes from the dishwasher smelled fishy. I ran a rinse setting with vinegar. Then I ran a hot empty load and each time it drained and filled back up, I dumped baking soda in there. The smell went away but now we notice a salty taste on our lips when we drink out of our glasses. The glasses look cloudy and I can feel it on the dishes as well. The dishwasher runs at least 1-3 x a day so it seems as if the dishes should be clear of it (as well as the dishwasher) by now. But, yuck!!! Any thoughts???
On a side note - anyone else get that fishy smell in their dw and how do you deal with it? I'm afraid to use baking soda again!!!!
Update: Not that anyone really NEEDS an update to this silly thread, but thought I'd just mention it in case anyone else finds themselves in my predicament! So, I ran about 1/2 cup of vinegar through each of the next several loads and the salty taste is gone. Must have reacted with whatever was left of the baking soda and made it go away! Cloudiness is gone from glasses too. Thanks for the suggestions!!!

I always turn a bowl right side up and run about 1/2 cup vinegar with each load. My dishes are cloudy from the detergent without it. Have never had the fishy smell.

You mentioned it fills back up perhaps your drain line needs cleaned out

I use citric acid in every load. It's the same thing that Lemi-Shine is made from which you can buy at any grocery store in the dishwashing detergent aisle. It's an additive that can be used in a larger amount to clean your dishwasher but also can be added to each load to keep soap residue down. I buy the citric acid in bulk from Amazon and it's so much cheaper that way.

You mentioned it fills back up perhaps your drain line needs cleaned out Oops - I mean that you know ihow it first fills, rinses and dumps, then fills again and the detergent goes in and it washes then dumps, and then it fills again (mine 2x) to rinse and dump. Well, between each load, i added more baking soda.

My problem is though, my dishes were never cloudy before I put that much baking soda in the wash and now they are. Ugh! I will start trying the vinegar though!!

Do you have a water softener system.... Maybe something to do with it

As much of a pain as it is, I would take your dishwasher apart and give it a thorough cleaning. Friends of ours had a similar problem, and once they removed and cleaned all the filters, it started running like new again. Good luck!

The salty taste is probably the baking soda, it may have clumped up somewhere in the bottom.
