I was listening to "Radio Lab" on NPR earlier today and heard this podcast, Radio Lab: Stochasticity, and I immediately thought of the other thread. First of all, I absolutely LOVE "Radio Lab" because it always features interesting scientific principles and how they apply to human thought and behavior. This particular podcast discusses how we process randomness and patterns, and how things that seem highly unlikely sometimes aren't as unlikely as we believe. I didn't get to listen to the entire podcast because I had to get out of the car to go into Aldi, but I plan to listen to the whole thing later. In any case, some of the discussion in the original "everything happens for a reason" thread sort of delved into fate and higher meaning, and this podcast sheds some light on how/why we try to assign higher meaning to random events and how our brains try to find a (predictable) pattern in those events. Just thought I would share for all the other "science nerds" on the board.

Thank you for sharing. Sounds interesting and I'm going to look it up.

It does sound interesting. Not sure if it's on the same vein, or going the other direction, but I love to hear stories about random things happening that tie one person to another. I don't believe in coincidences.
May I start a thread on random coincidences peas have experienced? Or could we share them here? (don't want to derail your thread)

It was really great to read everyones experiences The way I personally see it is there can be a scientific explanation for anything. Even the ideas or experiences that support a 'beyond the physical' existing. Where I'm at with this is how possible it is for there to be more than a scientific explanation. To create a balance with physical and beyond physical support. So science may be able to bring clarity to all the 'how? and what?' But it's the 'why?' that I personally support to go deeper with.

Another pea who doesn't believe in coincidences. Probably off topic, but I don't believe in fate either.

For me it's a God thing. I know not everyone believes, and I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything, but in my life there have been several things that were too obvious to have "just happened randomly".
Now off to find that thread....thanks for pointing me towards it.
