Back when it aired I was never interested, but, WOW, did I end up loving that show.
Of COURSE by the time I'd realized I wanted to see it, Netflix had stopped airing it, so I got the 1st 2 seasons on DVD.
After I'd seen about 5 episodes I went ahead & ordered the rest of the 5 seasons, and watched the final episode last night.
Sad it ended, but (as warned) it did start to go a bit downhill the last season since so many bailed & they changed the format
that had worked for so long. I still would love it if there were more, but alas.
As with Gossip Girl, the characters I liked in the beginning were the ones I couldn't stand by the end (& vice versa).
In the beginning it seemd like Justin was the only NORMAL one (despite being a druggie, lol). It seemed like they all
drove him to it. By the end he was the most annoying character on the planet. "I LOVED that guy!" What a needy,
co-dependant & annoying character, lol.
Rebecca (or as I called her "Emily/Amanda") even started getting on my nerves & I like the actress EVC.
Sally Field started to grow on me by the end.
Sarah (Rachel Griffiths) REALLY became a contemptable narcissist --but, wow, reading fan-interaction & co-worker "gossip"
there is a LOT of chatter that she is really like that but worse (so much out there that it seems to be "where there's smoke there's fire)".
Too bad, hate to hear it, but always liked her stuff, and still cried during her wedding.
OMG did I DETEST Scotty those first couple of episodes...then he became the most beloved character on the show (despite
try as they might, trying to make him the bad guy in a couple episodes last season). I did read that Scotty & Kevin (Matthew
Rhys "The Americans/Keri Russell's love) had a freakishly close friendship while filming (unlike most on set).
Love to read the juicy backstage gossip & sounds like there were a lot of big egos & infighting (hence the REAL wine in practically every scene).
The one bit I don't believe is "Justin" had a real fling with Sally Field in the beginning -- he DID really move on to dating Emily/Amanda,
then right after breaking up with her went on to date and marry Odette Yustman (Annable) who played nurse g-friend Annie.
I guess the rags say the only time they all got along was in their mutual contempt for Balthazar Getty (Tommy) when he'd come back for
a few episodes after he lost his damn mind in real life. (Sienna Miller, drugs, etc). Bizarre how quickly his appearance change to look
downright sickly (and just worse since). He DJ's & parties at clubs these days and obv doesn't need the $, but I guess will be in the upcoming
Twin Peaks reboot.
Loved Saul...
Holly grew on me (loved seeing her real-life husband/director Ken Olin as her beau---both from Thirtysomething)--and their real-life
daughter was Kevin & Scotty's surrogate. The "talk" is Emily/Amanda had some kind of "alliance" on the set with them, but the rest
were kind of stand-offish with "The Olins" when they took over a several episodes in (their son got some kind of big position offscreen as well).
Really, all the episodes directed by Ken seemed to be the best, and the worse ones in Season 5 were other people.
Ryan-FREAKING-Lafferty-- Ugh.
Allie McBeal was pretty much...older Ally McBeal. Her mouth was negatively distracting.
Beau Bridges...where WAS he the whole time...He would have made the show... too late, though. His dog
seemed to be laid off the last couple episodes...and WTF with the OTHER dog that showed up when Beau's dog
Lily was lost & came back? What happened? Who kept THAT dog?
I'd ask where Cooper was most of the time, but I was actually glad he disappeared lol
