Sometimes it's an insurance issue. More and more insurance companies are not paying for bloodwork done prior to a physical. Medicare doesn't, and other insurers are following suit. I work in a hospital, and we are getting a lot of denials (and unhappy patients) for labs drawn prior to the visit.

If I send a message and ask, my doctor will order the labs ahead of time so we can go over them at the appointment. Otherwise, if I get them done after (or have them done for some other reason, like illness), they just send me a message through the online charting system.

My doctor always does labs after the physical - doesn't make sense to me but that is how they do it. They mail the lab results to you and if there is anything to be concerned about, they will call you or indicate in the letter mailed with the lab work to call them for an appointment.

My doctor started doing this and I left the practice. It doesn't make sense to me. I prefer to do labs ahead of time and discuss with the doctor at the time of the physical.

I have Tricare and use a military clinic. My yearly physical is required to fill my old person prescriptions for diabetes, HBP and high cholesterol. I do my labs the week prior to my doctor appointment and go over results and any medication adjustment. I schedule my mammogram directly thru radiology yearly. My pap is done with a referral since I see my oncologist for that. I find my labs done first more efficient.

I work in a hospital, and we are getting a lot of denials (and unhappy patients) for labs drawn prior to the visit. I think that's a question of the dates, not necessarily that it was before the physical. Like with a pap, a mammo, or the annual visit itself, 365 days has to pass before insurance deems it "necessary" unless of course there is a documented problem. So you could still have the bloodwork first, but it has to be at least a year since the last bw. At least that's what I know about it, and if that changes, I sure hope someone tells me. We draw the blood at the visit but sometimes people prefer to use the lab before coming in, for whatever reason, and I expect them to keep up with those dates themselves. I have yet to hear that something was denied because it was done before the visit, unless it hadn't been a full year. But it didn't depend on an exam being done.

My Dr. likes to see me every 3 months because I am a type 2 diabetic. I refuse to go UNLESS my blood is drawn before or else we have nothing to talk about.

how does your doctors office handle this? I'm curious... I make my own Mammogram appointment, in fact it's made when I leave. I don't need a script from my doctor to have one. I get a slip for blood work before my physical. I have blood work every 6 months so I get the slip for the physical when I leave that appointment.
