Its that time again....
Careful opening your doors so pets don't dart out....also bring outside pets in garage or home...cats can go in a room where you can shut the doors and dogs you can put a leash on and tie it off by your chair...if that helps...a thunder shirt maybe...?
Some idiots will harm our animals for kicks...like putting fireworks in mouths and the other end....I see it on sites I sign for petitions and it is devastating...look out for neighbors pets as well....starting now and maybe a week after the 4th.
For the kids keep them in sight if you are in big crowds and if you give them sparklers please supervise...
From this ol' lady and the animal rescue site please be careful being on the road, drinking drivers will be out more so and I don't want any of my Peas getting hurt....

I always appreciate your animal posts. I have a Jack Russell who is absolutely terrified of fireworks, and I didn't even realize the 4th was right around the corner.

My corgi pup headed for the hills his first 4th of July. My son finally caught up to him close to busy street. None of my other dogs have ever been bothered by fireworks. We live close to an army base and can hear artillery fire several times a month. If we are outside he jumps into our laps for safety. Now we leave him inside when there are fireworks and let the sheltie out who doesn't give a rip.

Thank you for the reminder. I need to order my doggie zanx for my little girl. Vet says this is better for her, since she is so timid.

My corgi does fine with fireworks as long as she is outside and can see that it's just noisy stuff in the sky instead of brigands directly attaching the house. Take her inside, she freaks out. It's more peaceful to just slather on a ton of Off and spend the evening outdoors with pupper.

Has anyone given their dog Rescue Remedy ? My Sandy is soooo scared of the fireworks and tons of firecrackers going off. Last year I finely crushed a teeny bit of Xanax in some ice cream and it worked really good for her. She seemed so much better but was not knocked out at all. The next night ( which was going to be noiser than the first night) she wanted nothing at all to do with that ice cream trick !!! Gosh they are so very smart.
I've heard some say that they have given Rescue Remedy to their dogs with seemingly good results. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

While we are on the subject of Fireworks, I want to encourage the people to stay safe, too! I cover the Orthopedic Hand team at the level 1 trauma center in Seattle (RN), and this is a comic inspired by one of my MDs (from back in 2001). It's actually pretty factual and educational. We will get 15-20 people over the next few weeks with fireworks related injuries. Many will lose hands, a few will end up as example #5 on this graphic, and at least one ding dong will be holding a M80 in their lap while they try to light it and end up on the Urology service (which I also cover).

Poor Louis will have to have his meds. He is terrified of fireworks. I'll be glad when it's over!

Our dog went deaf. She now enjoys the fireworks. As long as she can't smell them.

Has anyone given their dog Rescue Remedy ? ...Isn't that the one they are advertising now on TV....? or at least here... alyca....you must see things that are heartbreaking...and I assume that you see face issues as well,I could not do the work you do....so thank you.... alexa11....I will as well, wonder how many fires are started this way...Columbus Ohio will have their big boom tonight....I will never go up there to see them... megmc....I am sorry your pup is deaf but happy he has you to care and love him... Thank you Ladies I am always hoping this post will remind others to look out for the pets, cats and dogs but other animals as well...there are a lot of sick people out there that will do terrible things to animals all in the name of having fun...outdoor pets need to be in a garage/shed/home if all possible, people will take them away and harm will happen....please stay safe and watch the kids...hugs

Thanks, Gail, for posting this. My two furbabies will be in a safe place this weekend and hopefully won't be stressed out by the fireworks. We live in the country too, and have heard some going off for the past week.
