Has anyone ever dug a hole for an above ground pool to put in the ground? So essentially it looks like an in ground pool.

no - but it's fairly common in my area - some people even dig one side lower than the other

Personally I think one of the advantages of an above ground pool in our area is that it's harder for an alligator to decide to move in but...ymmv

We have a 3' grade to our yard so our 52" tall above ground pool is part above ground and part in ground. The pool installers had to dig out about 3' on one side to make the ground level. We have a deck built around it so you can't tell from the deck but when your on the grass next to it, you can see how part is level with the grass and part is below.

My family did this when I was a kid. We dug down farther on one side creating a deep end and dug steps into the shallow end. It wasn't perfect because did it all ourselves with hand tools but it worked great and the pool was in use for about 10 years.
