Today we had to let our sweet dog Alexandra go. She was 13 years old and had been slowing down a bit. Last night she stumbled and tore a ligament in her hind leg. The vet said to repair it would be very painful and at her age, she probably would not walk normally and without pain again. We couldn't bear to cause her pain, so we made the decision to say goodbye. I know it was the right thing to do, but my heart is broken. Some of you might remember that about a year ago, she escaped our yard while we were out of town (we had a dogsitter/housesitter, just so you know). We thought we'd never see her again. But thanks to Facebook, we tracked down the very kind people who found her and cared for her until we could return. So I feel like we got an extra year with her. The kids are devastated. They do not remember a time before she was part of our family. DH is crushed. She was his baby, all 75 pounds of her. Tripp, the pup we found in our own yard last fall, is lost. He's been looking for her all afternoon.

My heart goes out to you. These are members of our family and to say goodbye and not have them in our homes everyday to enjoy life with us is a shocking and very difficult experience.
My thoughts are with you and your family. Poor Tripp too...

It is such a heartbreak. I am so sorry for your loss. You made the right decision, but that doesn't make it any easier, I know.

It is the absolute worst part of having pets as part of your family. I am so sorry for your loss.

This is, without a doubt, the hardest part of sharing your life with a pet. I'm so sorry for your family's loss.
It's awful when the right and loving choice is also the one that will break your heart.

I'm sorry. Pets are family members and it's so hard to see them go.
The Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I am so sorry. These threads break my heart because I know the pain you are feeling now. You grieve deeply because you loved deeply. Hugs to you and your family.

I'm so very sorry. You're right, it really is the hardest part.
This morning dh and I was discussing this exact topic. We both know the time is coming when we're going to have to make a decision about our old gal.
Thinking about you.

I am so sorry Your family, including Tripp, are in my thoughts. This quote sums it up so well: "Having a dog will bless you with the happiest days of your life...and one of the worst days"

I'm so sorry We know this pain ourselves. We had to put our 11 yr old Samoyed down in 2013 and as you can tell, we still think of him and miss him Our now oldest Samoyed, his little buddy is 12 this year and stiffening up. We are not ready to say goodbye to him and luckily he is not in pain, just slower and more careful when he gets up and down. They are the two in my avatar, our first dogs

I hear you. It is sooo hard. You love them so much, and they love you so unconditionally, and then you have to put them down. It's very hard. Within a year we lost our 13 yr old dog to a spinal compression, and then my dd's cat died during a surgical procedure. hugs to you and your family!

I know what you mean and I'm sorry for your loss. one of my dogs loves to follow us around everywhere, especially in the morning when we are getting ready for work. I looked at him this morning and said "I'm really going to miss you someday". he's only 8 and I hope we have many more years with him but I already know that I will miss him terribly someday. DH will be devastated when our other dog goes because he is her person. they are bonded like me and the little one are.

I'm there with you after letting my 16yo orange tabby go yesterday too. Those critters are like family.
You don't grieve alone and I know your sweet Alexandra is not suffering and truly knew how much she was loved.
Sympathy, thoughts and prayers. My 8yo says that she thinks pets get their very own forever sunbeam in heaven. That makes me cry and smile at the same time.
I'm so sorry. It must have been a huge shock, so unexpected.

It is so hard! Very sorry about your sweet pup-she's beautiful & certainly looks well loved! It breaks my heart to see our aging girl struggle at times. I know we will not handle her passing well. She is our baby!

My heart aches for you. Our kitty is showing her age and maybe facing this sooner than later. In-college-DD got her when she was 4. We don't know how long kitty will be with us as she had a recent episode and is at the vet again getting fluids and tests. Our vet is the best and we trust him to lead us the right way. Luckily both kids are old enough to be able to understand and make the decision best for kitty. It's a bit easier when kids are old enough to understand at least. It's so hard.
That is why I've been telling kids only pets that outlast me from now on. Tortoise, parrot... But I'm sure I'll cave.
RIP Alexandra
