and have kicked yourself since then…don't sweat it. I thought I was so smart buying these for my kids, who are now finishing Grade 5 and Grade 3. Every year I have really enjoyed picking out their best work to save in the pocket pages that came with the kit, and I've had to cull a ton of stuff over the years, but for the first time this year I have hardly anything to put in those darn pockets. I made a comment about it to DS and he said they use technology for so much of their work these days, there's hardly any paperwork to bring home at the end of the year. It's great for the environment and a sign of the times… but my memory-keeping-loving heart is a little bit sad.

I am (almost) over it now, but back in my kids' day I remember wishing they still got report cards. Like back in the day (pre 80's) when the teacher had to hand-write the grades (and their comments!) and they were report CARDS not flimsy pieces of paper. Cards.
I toyed around with making up cards to scrapbook and write their grades in as embellishment/memorabilia that I could hide the ugly old computer generated junk behind.
I guess I still could... Yeah, right.

I taught fifth grade last year and my kids had at least 20 papers a week to bring home. I didn't see technology changing the amount of papers in elementary school. As far a report cards. I hated them. You had to write on five pieces of paper to get a final report card. I was happy when we went to a computer based card. I did like to keep one of the stories they wrote each year. Those were pure awful.

Lots of things are digital but I have my kids print out their reports & I print their report cards, at least one math sheet, 1 science sheet, etc. to save for scrapbooking.

I also see a dramatic reduction in papers they bring home. My high schooler? Nearly nothing. I print out some stuff of theirs. And take photos of art projects.

Yep once my kids hit 7th grade here it's all chrome book based - their textbooks, their assignments , everything is done using them, doing presentations using various things and using google classroom - everything is done and submitted using the school provided chrome books.
The only things I have for each school year is first day and last day pics, report cards, any awards received or events like art show or geography bee. I'm actually grateful this year was the first year a child didn't come home with a ton of papers for me to agonize over what to do with them though .

Well that will save you the heartbreak of your kid telling you thanks but no thanks. My mom sent me mine when my oldest started school. So now I have my "best" work from elementary school...um...no thanks? I had no desire to keep that let alone move it to new houses.
My dh's mom saved his. When she passed we found it all in the guest room. He tossed it all. I salvaged a handful of pictures when I saw them as he flung them into the trash bag.

I see a big decrease in the amount of papers brought home between my 2 boys. They are 2 years apart, so one in 7th & other in 5th. What the older hand wrote, colored, created in 3d the younger one is typing, making a powerpoint of or not doing. I think a lot of it has to do with the push for everything to be connected to technology. But a lot of it is the increase in testing. I sub & am friends with many of their teachers. The "fun" activities they used to do can't happen as much, I'm told, because they have to test or prepare for testing. Younger DS had 2 recorded grades in each subject for the 4th quarter because they had KS state tests and district assessments going on.
