So this is a flip flop...correct? What about this...? Is this a flip-flop? We have a co-worker who thinks her blingy flip-flops are NOT flip-flops. What say you?

Yes. They are both flip-flops. My general definition is that anything that goes 'flip' flap' 'flip' 'flop' when you walk, no matter how pretty, how blingy, if they are all rubber, if they are mostly cloth or leather or thick or thin soled-they are all flip flops. I have about 30 pairs-from those that are only worn on the beach to those that are way dressier to be worn with skirts and dresses.

That is one butt ugly flip flop! LOL - don't visit Texas. Seriously. Because that's all you'll see. Only with more bling.

I can see where the second one might be called a sandal or a wedge.
Just like I don't call my Birkenstocks flip flops, I would not call those flip flops either.
To me a flip flop has plastic or maybe leather strap, and has a thin rubber sole.
I think the noise as another poster said, is the key.

We used to call those thongs growing up. That word isn't used much these days, maybe because of the reference to underwear. My dad had a pair of "zories".

Definitely they are both flip-flops.
Websters defines them as this : a light sandal, typically of plastic or rubber, with a thong between the big and second toe.
We had this conversation in my office last week. No flip-flops at work. We defined them as any sandal with the y-shaped straps that secure to the shoe between the toes, and no other straps. Even if they are leather.

Yes, both are flip flops. And can I just say, neither is appropriate for where I work. There's one woman I work with who wears flip flops all the time, even in the winter, in Michigan, no less.

as everyone already said, yeah, they're flip flops. To me, it's the annoying thing between the toes that makes them flip flops... if they had a strap around the heel, would that make them into 'sandals' perhaps?? flip flops are pretty much ubiquitous around here, too... I have a few coworkers who wear them, like, ALL the time unless it's the middle of winter and it's cold and raining. One woman hates having to wear 'real' shoes, lol! I used to hate wearing them because they're uncomfortable, but I've gotten used to it since I've lived in AZ. (only more understated ones, though-- never that much bling! )

Both flip flops
If it's an open shoe with no back and goes between your toes it's a flip flop
Only other thing I've heard one called is a pair of thongs and I hate that! ( and both would be 'things' in that case )

I have a question though. I have a pair of wedge heeled slides and a pair of black high heeled slides and when I walk in them they make the slap slap floppy sound that flip flops do. So can we say that there are exceptions to the flap-slap wound rule? ;-)

They are both flip flops. I worked somewhere once where flip flops were prohibited unless they were "cute". That is actually how it was written in the dress code. You can imagine the can of worms that opened.

Had a principal who tried that logic on admin. They ruled it a flip flop and inappropriate for work.

Definitely both flip flops. We had some gals at the range the other day with flip flops and sandals and low cut blouses (suitable for brass down the boobies, LOL).
