BDF and I were invited to a 4th of July party on Saturday and we're told to bring a dish to pass. As I've been too many parties where you're asked too bring a dish, you get a lot a salads and desserts and I don't want anything to melt.
I make some spicy pretzels that I thought would be good. Nothing to melt or sour. People can eat when they like just grab a handful (or use a spoon).
DBF thinks that doesn't constitute a dish to pass. He thinks it should be more meal-like. An actual dish to pass as though it were a sit down meal not a bbq.
Who's right?

I think spicy pretzels are a snack and are not a side dish or a dish to pass for a BBQ.

For me it depends on how many people are bringing food. Pretzels are not really a "dish to pass", but if there is going to tons of other stuff I think it will be okay to bring.

I don't think the pretzels will quite cut it. How about something more in the appetizer realm of things? My brother always brings his amazingly yummy jalapeno poppers. Or, if he knows the hosts well, he'll bring the ingredients and whip them up there. If not, he has a carrier thing that keeps them warm. Look on Pinterest for 'appetizers for BBQ'. There are a lot of good options on toothpicks. People love finger food on a stick!

I have never heard the phrase "dish to pass." From the context, I presume it means a dish that will be shared by the guests.
Around here we would say, "Bring a dish to share" or the event would be described as a potluck meal. Sometimes the potluck meal has a theme, "We are having an Italian food potluck."
Just an observation, carry on........

We always made fun of one of my aunts who always..and I mean ALWAYS brought popcorn as her dish to pass... So I have to agree with your DBF. Make a cold appetizer.

I don't think pretzels fit the bill here. I usually make either a grain based salad (farro, diced yellow/red/orange pepper, chopped red onion or sliced green onion, chopped fresh parsley, sometimes black olives/black beans/chic peas /whatever I have or feel like, and toss with a lemon vinagrette.) Always popular, holds up well. Or I make a more substantive appetizer--jalapenos filled with chorizo/smoked gouda cheese, wrap in bacon, skewer on cocktail pick, grill.
I also make a salad of diced watermelom, thinly slicely red onion, feta cheese, fresh basil or mint, and toss with balsamic vinagrette.
The other popular dish I make is Skinnytaste's Black bean avocado salad.
