It is tragic that any child was injured or killed.
But... the deaths occurred due to the dressers not being anchored to the wall. Every single piece of child furniture clearly and boldly states that it must be anchored securely to the wall to prevent tip over.
I think it is rash to recall furniture because some parents refused to follow instructions that were provided to protect their children.

ITA with what LavenderLayoutLady said. Since IKEA is such a giant retailer, the odds of their furniture being involved in an accident like this is higher just because of the sheer volume of dressers they sell, rather than anything wrong with the MALM itself. So sad, especially when it's totally preventable if people would just use the wall anchors, already! Or not put a massive TV on top of a tiny dresser and then plop a kid down in front of it for hours., but I digress...

And if there are lawsuits, I don't think IKEA owes anyone a cent if directions were not followed to anchor the furniture to the wall.

I am pretty sure they even come WITH the anchors, so the fault lays purely with the parents. IKEA already went above and beyond by including the anchors.

add me to the list of people wondering why IKEA had to do a recall on these. the shape, height and weight of those dressers isn't unique to them. virtually any piece of furniture can topple, especially a high dresser. this site, which I post a couple times a year on facebook as a reminder, tells of a little girl being crushed by a piece much smaller. www.meghanshope.org/meghans-story.html anchor your furniture people! it's tragic, but it's not IKEA's fault.

We have the four drawer version in my daughter's room. I can't remember if anchoring equipment came with it or the instructions (in 2010) mentioned it. We put an aftermarket anchoring kit on it after reading a horrifying blog where the blogger's three year old was killed by her dresser falling on her. I had a three year old at the time and although she didn't climb furniture, I didn't want to take any chances.
ETA: The baby seems MUCH more adventurous than her older sister ever was so this is a good reminder to anchor her non-ikea dresser to the wall.

I think this could happen with any similar dresser or bookshelf.

Anchoring any kind of heavy furniture is drilled into residents of California because of earthquakes. I have owned two versions of that dresser, I still have one inside my guest room closet and it stays there, anchored to the wall and I don't even have children.

Seems like it might seem like a higher incident rate than their other dressers? Since February 2014 there have been three fatalities involving MALM dressers. According to the linked article, there HAVE been three more fatalities with ikea dressers but it was three different styles and the time ranged from 1989 to 2007. So in two years, there have been the same number of fatalities with this one style than there has been over 18 years with their other models. I can see why they are recalling this specific model.
I will say that dresser is heavy, much more heavy than I expected for something that is particle board/MDF. That thing is solid and can do some damage if it fell over.

I have bought several dressers, night stands, book shelves from ikea over the last decade and all of them came with an anchor kit. These items will lean especially if there are on a carpeted surface. Children like to climb so I can see how this could easily happen. I believe MALM is (or was) the most popular line of dressers sold from Ikea.
