I have used Home Away three times and have been very pleased! That changed today! My husband and I found ourselves to have a rare weekend off! This was last minute and I decided to see if I could find a place for us to rent Saturday through Monday. Due to it being a holiday weekend, I was prepared find minimal options. I found three! One was a condo with a community pool and by the beach (Lake Erie). I was met with difficulty entering my credit card number (twice) to book the property. It finally went through and the property no longer showed available for the time period we requested. I left a voice mail for the property owner with a few questions. She called back not having any idea who I was. She said she thought she sold the condo, but the deal fell through and the property was relisted. I checked my credit card online and see four pending actions two of the same for each the deposit and the rental fee. She said the transaction usually does not even get processed until she accepts or declines the reservation. She did neither. So now not only do we not have that condo, the other options we had have since been booked. I am so bummed since my husband works SO much and we really needed this time away! I have been looking in various areas within three hours of our home and keep coming up empty. One guy emailed me back saying he might have a cancellation on another property, but it would $1k for three nights. That is definitely out of range for what we budgeted for two nights.
Thanks for listening and letting me vent!

Sounds like a scammer is listing the property as their own, when it's not. Did you call your credit card company to make sure the charges don't go through? That is a bummer!!!

How about a resort instead of a vrbo?

How about a resort instead of a vrbo? You might get lucky and find a really great room somewhere.

That just sucks ... how about booking a hotel in your home city ... a "staycation" ... that could still be fun

Do you live near a big city? Try the Hotel Tonight app. I often find incredible deals there.

That sucks.
Probably a long shot, but we just got back from an epic road trip where we spent one night at Geneva Lodge in Geneva-by-the-Lake on Lake Erie. It was a really nice property, with access to the beach and state park, and we paid less than $200/night for a family suite. I was disappointed we didn't have more time to spend there.

That sucks.
I was trying to pay for our last installment for the place we're renting next month this morning and had billing issues, too. It's showing up on my card that it went through twice, but VRBO is saying it's still unpaid. Their billing system crashed this morning. They had a warning up on their website for a while, but, of course, it went up after I hit submit.

VRBO/Homeaway is in the process of forcing a new booking policy on home owners. They take over the processing as part of the reservation process. It's all moving towards total automation (if you've signed up for it). Plus, they're now charging an additional 6% (or so) listing fee directly to the customer! The home owner has no choice to opt out and VRBO/Homeaway takes the payment directly so the home owner can't even refund it since the $ never lands in their hands. It's shady af and my house owner is getting rid of VRBO/Homeaway because of it. Try VRconnection. That's the other site we use for our reservations - still all in the owner's hands.
