In the meantime, the medicine (Apriso) is like $480.00 a month and he does not have rx coverage! That is going to take a chunk out of the budget, but hopefully this will get him back to normal. Thanks everyone! There are programs that might be able to help you to reduce your costs: www.aprisorx.com/apriso/savings-card

Maybe you could contact the drug company to see if they can help with the cost. I know many of them do.

Glad he got a diagnosis. My husband has ulcerative colitis as well. I looked up the med you DH was prescribed and it looks like it's a different brand name for the med my DH takes, Asacol. Unfortunately, it's not available as a generic yet. Your DH will need to take it every day, even when the flare subsides. Fortunately, the dosage is lower during remission, so it will cost less. There is also a steroid for IBDs (the name escapes me) that is very good for shutting down flares. It's available as a generic.
Our GI says diet has very little to do with colitis flares. DH does have to avoid caffeine and is supposed to avoid seeds (incliding popcorn). But the main reason for the latter isn't because it causes flares, but because it can cause big problems if he has a flare that causes an obstruction.
A really good resource the GI recommended to us is the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation. Colitis is a chronic disease that needs to be managed diligently, so education is crucial.
I hope he goes into remission quickly. Good luck.

It takes a load off to have a diagnosis, but it sucks. Lots of good information from other posters. Good luck to your husband and I hope he starts feeling better soon.

Thanks everyone! (((hugs))) to you & him. First thing to do, though. Call your doctor and ask if they have any samples to tide him over. Then contact the company that makes Apriso and ask if they have help to offer you. I know many companies will sell you the meds at low or no cost.

My husband went through the same thing. You should look into histamine resistance. I know it sounds weird, but my husband has responded well to using benadryl when he has flares. He takes one pill at night and follows a paleo diet.

My Dad was having the same symptoms you are describing and was diagnosed with ulcerated colitis several years ago. He was put on a gluten free diet and has to eat nuts, red, meat, popcorn, alcohol and a couple of other things in very small doses. As long as he eats properly he can control it with his diet. If he starts cheating he will have flair ups and has to get on steroids to get it back under control. It was very tough on him at first eating gluten free but has seemed to get easier the last several years since so there are so many more options. He is a huge sweet eater and that is what he would mostly cheat on, but they have come a long way with gluten free options for sweets in the last few years so he doesn't feel so deprived.

I would stay away from artificial flavoring and dyes, especially the chocolate " cookie" in ice cream sandwiches and Oreo cookies.

As you shop around for the best price for the drug, remember that you do NOT need a Sam's or Costco membership to use their pharmacy. (I think that's by law-- they can't restrict access.)
Glad you have a diagnosis to work with; hope he's feeling better soon.

Sorry to hear of the diagnosis but at least you know what it is and can begin treating it.
I hope the meds kick in quick and he gets to feeling better soon.

So glad you.got a diagnosis.
I have UC... However I had it so long (35+ years) that I had to have my colon removed. But before that I was on azulfadine which is an old sxhool, but very effective medication. Maybe the $$$ medication is to get him under control. There's a lot more info out there now then when I was diagnosed in the late 70s.
I will.say docs put me on all.sorts of diets...I just had to try things to see what I could tolerate.

Whenever I have had to pick something up behind the counter they ask for my Costco ID and won't sell to me without it. Weird. The laws in Canada and the US regulating pharmacies must be very different

It might have to do less with regulating pharmacies and more with the insurance side of things down here, but again-- just a guess.

The specialist may have a lower cost alternative for him, or as others have mentioned, the manufacturer will often subsidize th cost
