Wait, the people who paid for the food don't keep the leftovers? Nope. Most people don't realize how much food is leftover. BUT we did do a wedding where the bride did. OMG she went postal. Yes, the bride was cheated. And we ended up throwing a lot of the leftovers out because there any lunches that week. You should see the food left over/ thrown out at sit down dinners. One wedding I started saving the roast beef from the plates that had not been touch. I took home over 4 maybe five pounds of beef maybe more. No matter how trust worthy you think a caterer is, they are a business trying to make the most profit. You took the meat off the plates people had eaten off of? Of course a caterer is in business to make a profit. Most that I know make a good living by serving reasonable quantities of great food. Around here most caterers donate the leftover food, but not off people's plates,to a local charity.

I think the biggest key to wedding reception food is to serve normal food that you know guests will eat. Stop with always trying to be fancy and so upscale. Guests have leftovers usually because the food isn't good!

Good food is good food, upscale or otherwise, and bad food is bad.

I took that to mean the food was plated but not served. So no guest fingers or forks would have touched it.

At our wedding, we had plated dinners. It's customary where we are and buffets were rarely offered as an option when we were looking at venues. We would never consider not having an open bar and offering one signature drink would never fly. Our family and friends plus us, enjoy drinks at parties and we would never ask guests to pay for them.

I think the key is this: you're throwing a party for your friends to come celebrate your union with you. Be a good hostess and think about what they would enjoy be it open bar, live music or Dj, plated food or buffet.
My fiancé and I are having a catered meal with cold sandwiches and fruit because that's us. We're having on tap beer because again, that us. A signature drink would get a lot of laughs. Cold sandwiches isn't necessarily much cheaper than hot food, it's just what we like to eat. We're having a Dj and beer and a good old time in a relaxed setting.
When guests come to our house we use paper plates. If we were more formal people then yes we'd serve more formal food. There's no right or wrong. Except reserving food--that's wrong and probably breaking about 10 health codes.
We are over buying our food because we get to take home the leftovers. I can't imagine paying for food that gets reserved. Thrown away ok but reserved? That's disgusting.

I know I shouldn't be, but I am shocked at some of the rude, entitled guests on this thread!!
