We have always used a dinner table knife at the table to cut grilled chicken, and a steak knife to cut steak. However, I did some googling this morning that led me to believe that the table knife is just for soft foods. The example given for when you would use it was to cut a large piece of lettuce. Or some fruit. A "meat knife" (i guess like a steak knife) was for all meats. So, what say the peas? Which knife do you use at the table to cut grilled chicken - dinner knife, or steak knife? Thanks!

I use a steak knife for all my meat. Didn't realize that until you asked and I had to think.
And to be honest I do almost all my cutting at the table with a steak knife. Unless it is something I can cut with edge of my fork. I would use my dinner knife to cut a piece of bread though.
I do eat North American style not European and that might make a difference.

I just use my fork, unless at a fancy dinner, where I would use a table knife.

I'd start with a table knife and then if I couldn't cut it easily, I'd get a steak knife.
Interesting question though. I'd never thought about it til now.

Dinner knife for everything that needs to be cut except steak knife for just steak. Not for any particular reason I just never bring out the steak knives unless we're having steak.

Steak type knife for any type of meat. Butter knife for anything else (I assume that's what a dinner knife is.)

I never really called it a "dinner knife" we always called that a butter knife. If I have one with good ridges, I would use that, otherwise, a steak knife.

We mainly use steak knives with grilled meat ... it just seems to work better  Baked chicken is usually more tender so I often use a regular knife but dh still uses a steak knife ... |

I have always used mostly steak knives for meats. The last few years, when just us eating, for some reason the kids have started to prefer the cheap little paring knives to cut almost everything. Weird, but so are they  and it works. And I find myself grabbing them more often. It's catchy! Like thisor this. |

If I need a knife, it's going to be a steak knife. The only thing I use a butter knife for is spreading butter and other things on bread.

Oddly we only use a steak knife for steak. Other meats seem to be just fine with a butter/dinner knife.

We went to the golf course restaurant for dinner Saturday and I had smoked grilled chicken (on the bone) they served it with a serrated type of knife (steak knife but smaller blade). This restaurant is not super upscale but it was a cloth table covering linen napkins, and $100 for 2 with a few drinks.

Just a regular knife (not sure if that's a 'dinner' knife or not). I don't even own any steak knives so I use an ordinary knife when I'm eating steak as well.
