Went to a restaurant over the weekend--a sizable chain Mexican place in Dallas.
Ordered a dish that was 6 large shrimp, butterflied, grilled with a sauce. They were very tasty but too flipping much work because they were cooked on the grill with the shell on.
I've never had such a messy time trying to get the shrimp out of the shell with sauce-y fingers. I've eaten a lot of shrimp in several countries and I've never encountered it butterflied in the shell. I'm trying to understand the point.
I was with DH who understands my love of shrimp and we weren't in a hurry (fortunately) so I took my time and unshelled each one...but I can't imagine how bad I would have felt if we had been there on a business dinner or something more when I wanted to be neat and timely.
Have you ever heard of grilling butterflied shrimp in the shell?

Why didn't you bring it to the attention to the manager?

That would bother me because I rarely like to eat with my hands unless it is chicken wings Too much effort but hopefully they were tasty ...

Saw a cooking show the other say and the shrimp were cooked in the fire with shells and head on. Suppose to add to the flavor.
I would think the menu description would have included that info. Like someone else said, I'd have asked the server if it was suppose to be that way.

Why didn't you bring it to the attention to the manager? I'm just not that person. It wasn't mentioned on the menu. I looked again after we left to be sure I hadn't missed it. The heads were not present. I can't abide heads. There were six shrimp. If only one had been in its shell I would have thought perhaps it was an oversight. But no, it was all six. it was a very tasty dish. But then I rarely meet a shrimp I don't like.

No, I haven't seen butterflied shrimp in the shell. I would have asked for something like a crab cracker to help me get into those puppies.

That would have been really annoying and I would have been "that person" over it if it wasn't described as shell on shrimp in the menu.
I was at a very nice steakhouse a couple of years ago and ordered a side of shrimp scampi and my shrimp came with their little legs still attached. No shell, just tails and legs. I couldn't do it and sent them back. The waiter and manager didn't seem to understand what the problem was. I've never been served shrimp with their legs still attached before. Yes I could have removed them but for the price I was paying that is just not my job.

I've had them often like this. If they are butterflied they should be fairly easy to get out of the shell. My dh loves to do them on the bbq like this, stops any drying out and adds to the flavour. I don't mind the mess

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "not that person". If I'm paying for something and don't think it's right I will discuss it politely with the server or manager. They want to know if there is a problem rather than a diner complaining on social media. ( not saying you did OP).

Maybe for large shrimp they were treating them as you would lobster tail. Since they were butterflied weren't they just sort of laying in the shell? You wouldn't really have to peel them -- more just lift them out. It would require fingers though, I imagine.

I don't mind the mess I agree totally with this. I would say during BBQ season we probably have them in the shell way more than out of the shell. It does add to the flavour.

Most of the time you don't even need to use your fingers if they are done properly.

I've had this many times and it's not really you have to peel them it's more just lifting of the shell like a previous poster said. I have no issues with it as long as they hand me lots of napkins but I'm also known to peel pounds of crawfish like no ones business either lol. I always heard keeping the shell on holds the flavor in better.

I always heard keeping the shell on holds the flavor in better. It was a little challenging, actually. I've peeled tons of steamed and raw shrimp but this was trickier than that due to the sauce. The shrimp outer body is rather thin so peeling it isn't really something you can do with a fork. I've eaten crab legs and lobster. I crack crab legs myself w the tool. With the lobster, the waiter removed the meat from the shell table side.

I don't grill shrimp other than on kabobs, so I googled. It looks like there are a ton of recipes for grilled butterflied shrimp with the shells left on, so it is apparently a not uncommon way to prepare them.

I sloppily ate all 6. It was a surprise. Something I've never encountered before. And depending on who I was dining with, I might have been less inclined to enjoy the situation...that's all.
