Watters world that is. I find it unbelievable that people in this country are so uneducated. Downright scary
I used to think that he was intentionally editing out people who got the right answer and just leaving the dummies. But he stated tonight he doesn't. So many of the young people in our country are morons.
I know there are many young people who are not but when you get groups of people who have no idea how many senators we have in this country or that George Washington was our first president, it really makes you question the education system

Scary isn't it and to think, these people are actually going to vote. No wonder this country is such a mess.

Not sure what the show is, but there are plenty of non-young people who are just as ignorant as you describe.

I dislike the kind of shows that portray young people as clueless ignoramuses. I know a lot of them that are smart, dialed in, and pretty on top of current events. Those shows are edited to make it look like the world is burning and the new generation is going to doom us all. I hadn't heard of this particular show, but I have seen others that ask history or current event questions of young people who can't answer the easy ones-questions I know that either of my sons and their friends would be able to correctly answer.
Of course, that could be just my experience. *shrug*

I worked in the field of history interpretation..and you can assume almost no history knowledge for all ages of Americans...sad. I did love getting people excited about the history site they were at...history is poorly taught..it is getting better..but civics and history can be glossed over.

I am constantly amazed by some of the answers. I really like Watters, though.
History and civics are being cut in some schools, which makes me so sad.

However, Jesse Watters says he chooses people at random and does not edit the responses so that the only ones we see are those who get them wrong. I have no reason to disbelieve him.

I know that math is glossed over in the elementary schools.
So if math, history and civics are being glossed over, what are they teaching?

Jay Leno did something similar back in the day and I was appalled at the lack of knowledge. Even if it is heavily edited, there are still people out there that don't know/don't remember.
Much of this IS taught, but students just don't learn or don't put any importance on it.

DH and I watch this show in disbelief. He doesn't ONLY ask young people. But on tonight's show he was at the beach asking mostly kids on spring break. so these are kids who attend college. The fact that he could randomly select from this audience so many who couldn't correctly answer questions like, "Who did we fight in World War II" is really disturbing.

DD and DS had their first history class in 6 th grade in our school district .
DS is having / had a good experience but DD had an awful one and learned very little - she had very little covered in 6th, nothing in 7th or8th and went into 9th only having learned about immigration and the civil war and the United States for geography.
DS has already learned more than that as they seemed to have expanded or corrected that problem but still the lack of history in elementary (focusing on English and math and those stupid standardized testing that only covers those two) .
it's awful how much they don't know at their age but thankfully they are becoming at least more aware of world geography because of a teacher sized 24x 36 world map I hung in the living room that at first they balked at but now I find them discussing and pointing at things on a daily basis now.

DD and DS had their first history class in 6 th grade in our school district . That is amazing to me that your school district doesn't start history until 6th grade! When I homeschooled DD's, they were required to study American history/civics/geography/state history/world history from the beginning. When I was in fourth grade, it was state history plus we had to learn all fifty states in alphabetical order with the capitals (spelled correctly). My sister had to memorize the preamble to the Constitution in 6th grade civics class (I was so glad we moved to another state after that- I was worried about having to memorize the preamble and recite it in front of the class!) I taught US/Canada/Central America/South America geography to my 5th graders. What a shame that kids aren't being taught history- they will be doomed to repeat past mistakes. No wonder so many don't have a good view of what it means to be an American- they don't appreciate what the generations before us went through to get us here. And learning about world history and geography is so important to understanding everyone else in the world!

Again, this is the first time I have heard of him, so I have no reason to disbelieve him either. But the editing doesn't have to be in how they edit the words the people use, but in who they choose to portray. I've recently raised two kids in a state that has a pretty stinky record for education. They both have had history, math, social studies...starting in elementary school. It just feels like teenagers/young adults get a bad rap these days.

I know that math is glossed over in the elementary schools. So if math, history and civics are being glossed over, what are they teaching? They're teaching this...... link. That article doesn't say that kids aren't learning math in elementary schools in general, it focused on one set of schools and the programs they are running. It had nothing to do with math at all, really. I don't know how you can call math being glossed over at any elementary school, really. In in the school where I teach kids do learn about history, math, and science. We even have simulated congressional hearings throughout our county where students debate ideas set forth in the constitution and relate them to modern occurrences. State govt officials and other volunteers who would have knowledge relevant to the hearings come in and judge. They read an summarize newspaper articles weekly and do lessons involving political cartoons and their role in shaping society. We do historical tours for field trips and teachers do their best to make history interesting for the students. This is not just limited to our one school-this happens throughout the county where I teach. We we have an extra curricular 24 club that is math based. Kids compete is regional competitions (and up) starting in 3rd grade. I know this is statewide and I believe in many other states as well. I don't think core subjects are being glossed over. Not in my experience at least.

I know that math is glossed over in the elementary schools. So if math, history and civics are being glossed over, what are they teaching? Math is not glossed over here. It is all about STEM, so science and math are pushed heavily. Luckily, we have a fantastic social studies department. I really can't think of a single weak teacher in that department in our high school and I love how much they inspired my kids to love social studies. So much so that my youngest is graduating soon to be a social studies teacher. I had never heard of Watters until recently. I saw a clip that some friends posted on Facebook because a college friend was interviewed by him. He may not edit to only have wrong answers, but I can guarantee you from this that he does manage to make them seem less intelligent or more silly than they actually are.

I know that math is glossed over in the elementary schools. So if math, history and civics are being glossed over, what are they teaching? It makes me so sad that we no longer teach history and science. They are not tested by our government, which means they don't change funding. Schools drop it for the sake of more time for math and language arts. Here is my day in 4th grade... 8:45-9:00 arrival 9:00-10:00 math workshop 10:00-10:30 math small group remediation/enrichment 10:30-12:00 reading workshop 12:05-12:35 lunch 12:35-12:50 recess 1:00-1:30 literacy small group remediation 1:30-2:00 music, art, PE, or computer lab 2:00-3:00 language arts 3:10 first dismissal It's a total shame.

I'm glad my dgd's mother decided to homeschool her. I was very much against it at first, but after seeing her mother's curriculum and what she was doing in public school, I've changed my mind.

I have ADULT friends--- TEACHER friends -- Who could not answer those questions. I was listening to one just last week going on and on about how evil Hillary Clinton was and how she could not wait to vote for Donald Trump. I asked her to name three other people that ran for president in the primary season. She could only name Ted Cruz.I also asked her to name our two senators from Texas. She could not do it! She didn't even know Ted Cruz was our senator. She also could not name our governor. She is one of theses people that gets all of her news from Facebook.
