I have ADULT friends--- TEACHER friends -- Who could not answer those questions. I was listening to one just last week going on and on about how evil Hillary Clinton was and how she could not wait to vote for Donald Trump. I asked her to name three other people that ran for president in the primary season. She could only name Ted Cruz.I also asked her to name our two senators from Texas. She could not do it! She didn't even know Ted Cruz was our senator. She also could not name our governor. She is one of theses people that gets all of her news from Facebook. I have struggled valiantly to avoid participation in any political threads. But I just have to ask here, is it your belief that supporters of Hillary would get these questions right?

I think there are uniformed "supporters" on both sides.

I know that math is glossed over in the elementary schools. So if math, history and civics are being glossed over, what are they teaching? It makes me so sad that we no longer teach history and science. They are not tested by our government, which means they don't change funding. Schools drop it for the sake of more time for math and language arts. Here is my day in 4th grade... 8:45-9:00 arrival 9:00-10:00 math workshop 10:00-10:30 math small group remediation/enrichment 10:30-12:00 reading workshop 12:05-12:35 lunch 12:35-12:50 recess 1:00-1:30 literacy small group remediation 1:30-2:00 music, art, PE, or computer lab 2:00-3:00 language arts 3:10 first dismissal It's a total shame. we have state tests in these areas in different grade levels.

My daughter just finished the 4th grade and she learned plenty of history. California state history is the focus in the 4th grade, that's when they memorize all the explorers and 49ers and make the Mission project (laws that's a huge project).

I believe my kids could answer the questions, but I love history so it has been part of our lives. I explain historical events and when we vacation we often go to historical places.
So, while it is shame that it is getting cut in the schools, it is also not a priority at home.
Ftr, I don't know who my congressman is right now. We had the same one for years, and I am drawing a blank.

There is a bullseye graphic that shows howhat kids should be taught history/geography so they they can build background knowledge. In the center is their home/neighborhood, then town, county, state, country and so on.

Our district got redrawn after 2010, and we've been trying to vote Coffman out ever since. When the redistricting happened, he went from hardcore tea party to moderate so fast I'm surprised he didn't throw his back out.

I've been impressed by what my kids have learned in their K-12 history classes. The younger 2 (17 and 12) will get into discussions in the car about one paticular historical event or another and realy delve into the subject. I tend to shut up and drive so I can listen in on what they're saying. Each year of school has a different historical focus. They learn about their town in 3rd, their state in 4th, etc.
