My son's family (DS, wife, DGS 5 & DGS 2) are on vacation. I offered to have something at home for them for dinner after their long plane trip. Here is my criteria:
Something the the boys would enjoy. (no salads) Quick to heat up Something substantial (no soup) No grilling (they have a charcoal grill)
Anyone got any ideas for me?

I was thinking a lasagne that could be popped in the oven (or microwave) to warm when they walked in

Well I was going to suggest soup and a loaf of crusty bread. My Mom always brings over a jar of homemade soup for us when we return from a trip. She's been doing it for years.

Pulled pork sandwiches with the meat made in the crockpot. Lasagna is always a good option, too, for something nearly everyone likes.

We do this when family travels to see each other. We usually serve soup, chili, stew, or something like that. Quick and easy and can be kept warm in a crock pot if we are delayed.
BLTs are quick to put together. If you have the tomatoes sliced, lettuce washed, and bacon cooked, all you need to do is make the toast.
If it's late (we often fly in at Christmas on an evening flight), Mom and Dad usually have cheese, crackers and sausage. My parents drive to see us in the spring or summer, so I usually have some sort of appetizer recipe that I've been wanting to try.

I agree with those who have suggested Mac and Cheese and/or lasagne. Bagged Cesaer Salad kit. Loaf of crusty bread.

Moscatelli pasta cooked A jar of red sauce Ground beef, browned and crumbled. Really crumbled Mix together Put in baking pan. 9x 13
Now the yuck part. Cut velvetta into chunks. Sprinkle into pasta. Mix it gently in. Don't over mix
Then cover it and put it into the frig, to be heated when need.

Thanks everyone. I have spent the last hour looking up crockpot macaroni and cheese recipes. It seems to be hit or miss. That opened up more possibilities to find a crockpot recipe. Thanks for all the suggestions. And realllllllly, Elaine, a BAGGED salad? ETA: I did see a pressure cooker macaroni and cheese recipe on All Recipes I believe.

basket1lady now I want a BLT. Thanks a lot. What a nice idea and a lovely thing to come home to! We bought real tomatoes at a roadside stand in WV on Saturday and had real BLTs for a 4th of July lunch today. My favorite sandwich, hands down. So wonderful when the tomato juice drips out all over the plate.

I know you said no soup, but gazpacho and corn bread would be 100% make-ahead. You could add chips and a 7-layer dip for extra heft.

I spent several hours making fresh cottage cheese today, so it isn't like I can't/don't cook , but I do break pea-norms and feed my family bagged salad regularly. So far they haven't complained! But I do understand that it ranks up there with suggesting serving them Spam as an appetizer followed by Hungry Man TV dinners. Pressure cooker anything thing would be great - I was just thinking of what my boys would eat at 2 & 5. If you are thinking of the pressure cooker route, meatloaf in the pressure cooker is amazing!

If you lived in Hawaii, Spam would be a delicacy. Hawaiian's love Spam. I am dead serious. I wish I had a pressure cooker but alas I do not. I posted about seeing the recipe because of the ongoing pressure cooker threads. Now I want one. I don't even like meat loaf. Haha

If they were on a vacation where they were eating out most of the time, I would make baked chicken, baked potatoes and a vegetable. When we return from that type of vacation, we always want simple, less rich food.

I would do a rotisserie or roast chicken, which can be eaten warm or cold in case there is a flight delay. A greek salad, hummus and some pita.

This is a comfort food recipe, and some will turn up their noses, but my family loves this. Our son calls it cheesey spaghetti. From the ingredients, I'd say the recipe is from the 50s or 60s
New Orleans Spaghetti
Use deep skillet or just a sauce pan and: 1 lb hamburger meat, browned with a chopped onion. Salt to taste Add: can tomato soup can mushroom soup Stir well as the soup heats and "melts" with the meat. Cut 1 lb of Velvetta into chunks and stir into the meat mixture, stir as cheese melts. Dash of red pepper to taste.
When melted mix with spaghetti that you have cooked while the meat is being prepared.
Serve with a green salad and hot bread.
