The mall is still under construction, so that long stretch of grass in front of the Monument is not available for sitting on, and a block behind that is the Smithsonian Folklife festival. It's been 2 or 3 years now that it's been under construction, way too long I think. Seriously, they must be building underground bunkers or something. I asked what they were doing when we were at the Smithsonian recently, and they said landscaping. They should have said "landscaping" wink wink. OMG I never thought of that! lol If they are building underground tunnels, it's not visible to the naked eye. The official story is they are fixing the irrigation to prevent flooding in the city. Oh and that's another way I knew they were using old footage, the US Capitol has been covered in scaffolding construction for some time now too but in their footage, nothing.

We were there and even talked about the fact that they would need to use last year's footage. When we left the cloud cover was so thick you couldn't see the top of the Washington Monument from the highway. The Mall in front of the Washington Monument was open, and once the rain tapered off around 8:30 more people came in. But the sides were not nearly as packed as they have been in the past. Bonus - the port-o-potties were fairly clean and even still had hand sanitizer in them! LOL! We could see the bottom third of the fireworks, the rest were faint glows behind the clouds. Still happy we went (we were with a group of friends and we had a great, albeit soggy, time. This photo was taken about 7:30. It filled up after 8:30.
