Or rather, on PBS. PBS "fake" fireworks
We were at my dh's office looking out at the Washington Monument. At the same time the TV was on because we'd been watching the concert from the lawn of the Capitol. One of the other people there said "you know, that [on the TV] sure doesn't look like what we're watching right now." hahaha The weather was rainy and cloudy, and the fireworks on the TV were on a lovely clear evening. PBS used footage from past years to put on a better show. They said it was "more patriotic." lol. We enjoyed the real show even if it was cloudy. The clouds reflect the fireworks and look very eerie. People are very upset about this. lol. Not Pea-livid-worthy in my opinion, although I do think PBS should have announced that the fireworks weren't live.

That is funny. Not sure I would be upset about it

I don't blame them for using past footage if it was prettier on TV - not a big deal to me. I love Fireworks but this year's show isn't much different from a prior year's show so I don't have an issue with it.

Ha! That is hilarious, but also just plain silly - anyone who was paying attention to the parade or the concert would have noticed the difference in weather, yes? As long as I've lived here, I've never seen fireworks on the mall. We say every year that we will consider it, and promptly dismiss the idea year after year. We were at Falls Church City again this year, and it was a really excellent show - probably the best I've seen in the last 10 years. I thought the fog and clouds made it a better show. We can usually see the mall fireworks in the distance from the metro parking roof, but the cloud cover this year made that impossible.

I find the outrage pretty funny.
We did our main firework show in WV on Saturday and spent last night inside watching the Capitol Fourth show on PBS. You couldn't pay us to go down to the Mall - especially in the rain yesterday.
We noticed a HUGE difference when they tried to use live footage - it just looked like a red haze and the cameras, which must have digital filters, etc., would have weird flashes and other issues when they cut to live. We all preferred the footage from other shows which was much clearer.

I noticed that as well. Their footage was from a helicopter so I don't expect them to do that every year, it's not like the fireworks change. And since it was so cloudy I think it makes sense. But it is humorous to think about.

A friend of mine plays guitar for a country superstar. Almost all her "live performances" are prerecorded a few days before the actual event.
It's really not uncommon for reality on tv to not actually be reality.

I also noticed singers who forgot to hold their microphone up when it was their turn to sing, but their voices were loud and clear. Things that make you go hmmmm...

My 9 year old was LIVID because it "wasn't fair" that they had "perfect" weather downtown and "we didn't go because you said it would be raining." I tried to tell her it had to be taped but she wouldn't listen.
The number of people who forgot they were watching a TV show astounds me.

I was soaked just grilling burgers and bratwurst on our propane grill on the deck. It poured up until the concert. I think the people there were mostly VIPs with seats, rather than having to sit on the grass/mud. When they flashed to pictures of the Mall - it looked relatively empty from where they were up to the Washington Monument - normally you don't see any grass for all the people sitting there.

We watched that last night on tv and it never registered that the weather didn't match! I'm not one to notice all those little details. Even with taped footage, the music was ten times better than the music we had on the live show here in Houston.

It was a top story on the morning news shows. I guess there's not much else going on in the nation to talk about. PBS, doing the devil's work by defaming our beloved national holiday celebration. The outrage.

We were in DC yesterday to watch the parade and the fireworks. After walking around in the rain all afternoon we were pretty miserable. I didn't have any patience to wait out the rainy evening and try to find a dry place to watch the fireworks so we checked out of our hotel and drove home. I was so sad about the weather. I was so excited to see the national fireworks show on the Mall for the first time. What a miserable day. I don't blame them for not televising the rainy show.

AH! Thanks for the validation!
We were watching that last night and I had the theory that they were splicing stuff in from previous years.

I agree. They would have been much better off if they had just informed people. And I was surprised at the level of outrage.

Yesterday was positively miserable and I did think about tourists several times throughout the day and felt sorry for anyone who made the trip. Going to see the Boston Pops and their fireworks is on my bucket list - I would be heartbroken if we planned it all and then the weather was like it was here in DC.

I had seen the headline before talking to a friend who was telling me about watching the fireworks on TV last night. I couldn't help but laugh and say they didn't show you the real fireworks. I agree that they should have informed their viewers. My friend enjoyed what she saw but she and others were a bit duped when they saw live performers and a prior years fireworks on the same show.

DD#1 was on the capital steps... she also went to Mt Vernon yesterday and saw George Washington! (LOL it made her more excited than Mickey Mouse at WDW!)
That said, I think it would have been best to put "prior recording due to the weather" or something to that effect so that watchers would know of the edit. I noticed the difference on the TV, but didn't realize the why. Just would have been nice to know since you expect it to be live.

We watched A Capitol Fourth last night and my kids were all "wait a minute....I thought it was raining!" Hee hee...on the one hand, I was a little annoyed about it, but on the other hand, the editing in of the footage from last year or whenever it was made for a much better fireworks display! My BIL was here watching with us and he said the "live" footage reminded him of watching Desert Storm....when they would show the SCUD missiles with night vision!! I wonder at the conversations the producers and technical director were having about it...."think they'll notice? Nah...." I was texting back and forth with my dad about it--he worked in TV production for years.

didn't watch them, but I don't understand why they WOULDN'T have said it was prior footage due to the weather... All they would have had to do was show crappy weather and people would have understood. To me, the outrage wouldn't be so much that they weren't live but that they didn't announce it so people who were watching from Nebraska, Wyoming, California, wherever (i.e., NOT local) would KNOW that.

Most I have talked to aren't mad they used taped coverage they are upset that PBS kept saying live from the mall instead of just saying the weather sucks so we are going to be playing a mix of this years and lasts.

I love the Capitol Fourth and would always go on the 3rd for the practice show. Spectacular. Now that I am not close by, I watch on TV and was also surprised that the fireworks were so beautiful when it was so cloudy, but never thought it was fake! Hah ha. Who cares?
We know they always record on the 3rd just in case they have to show that show on TV because it's pouring on the 4th.

I sat in front of the concert last year and it had rained that morning so the ground was so muddy, my feet were completely covered in it. I did notice how happy the people seated in the front reserved seating area looked. lol The mall is still under construction, so that long stretch of grass in front of the Monument is not available for sitting on, and a block behind that is the Smithsonian Folklife festival. It's been 2 or 3 years now that it's been under construction, way too long I think.

I asked what they were doing when we were at the Smithsonian recently, and they said landscaping. They should have said "landscaping" wink wink.

My daughter is insisting we go back and try again next year! We were visiting friends in Shepherdstown, WV and saw the Maryland Symphony Orchestra and fireworks at the Antietam Battlefield Friday night, so that was fun!
