None of your options really suit me, but I chose "A little bit every day". The truth is that I clean as required. If the kitchen floor looks dirty it gets mopped. If the carpet looks dirty it gets vacuumed. If the TV cabinet is dusty it gets wiped. Laundry gets washed when the machine is full. If the ironing basket is overflowing I iron DSO irons. I try to clean the bathrooms benches and toilets before they are visibly dirty.
I have friends who say "Oh I can't do such-and-such, Saturday morning is my housework day." Stuff that. I could never ever ever live my life by having a set day to do my housework, and neither would I spend half a day of my precious days off doing a whole lot of housework.

I have a lot in common with Rainy_Day_Woman. During the school year, it's just a nightmare. The best thing that ever happened to my housekeeping was having one of my kids' music teachers come to the house for lessons. That means that once a week, we have to do a mad-dash quickie "cleaning" of the house. It takes under an hour. Things get picked up, vacuuming gets done, all trashcans get emptied, and the bathroom gets wiped down. If there's time, I'll get out the furniture polish and swipe a few things with that. My kids are all big enough to pitch in, and we live in a not-huge apartment with one bath, so it's not an enormous job. I do wish we could hire a cleaning lady for the school year. That would be all kinds of awesome! Ahahaha! My daughter's guitar teacher comes in Thursday and it's a mad dash to make things look acceptable. The living room furniture does get cleaned that day My husband said if he had have known we would be forced to clean once a week, he would have had her start lessons years ago. (that said her teacher is a frat boy and I could not clean for three months and it would probably still be cleaner than his place, lol)

I appreciate all of these responses! Currently I work 7am-4pm and I commute an hour at least each way. I get home at 5pm and workout until 6pm and then start dinner. We are done with dinner and cleaning up by 8pm and then I'm wiped! I have zero energy to clean, it's the most I can do to do a load of laundry and put it away. I'll be honest though - house cleaning is not my priority but I must have a clean kitchen and bathroom. However, the pups make the house super dusty and the floors are quite scary. I'd love to get someone that would come in and do the floors every other week however, like, anniefb stated - that money looks so much better in my bank account. As far as the laundry, throw a load in when you get home at 5, then after working out, move it to the dryer and start another to run while you make dinner and move that to the dryer before you eat. Laundry doesn't need constant attention, no need to wait til after dinner to start it.

I think you guys might be swaying me to get some help around the house. I'm asking around about prices because I think just overall it would help me enjoy the house and be relaxed more when I'm at home.

I checked off focus on cleaning on my day off, but, I do some things everyday, like keep my kitchen cleaned and make the bed and keep up with the laundry during the week as needed. I also do not like clutter so I put things away right away the majority of the time.
I do what I call my big cleaning like scrub the bathrooms, dust and vacuum and mop floors on my day off....typically Saturday mornings.

I have someone coming out tomorrow morning to give me a quote on her services. I'll keep y'all updated! I'm curious to know what you pay and what region you are in - if that makes a difference.

My house is never 100% cleaned. I usually do the bathrooms, kitchen, mopping and dusting on the weekends, and straightening up and vacuuming during the week. However, none of the weekend stuff is done all at once. I try, but I usually lose my mojo half way through.

I would love to have someone come in and clean, but that would involve me first getting rid of all of my clutter! But this thread inspired me to take out the vacuum and do a quick 10 minute sweep before I went to work. One chore down and a million more to go when I get home.

I live in west Texas where there has been a downturn in the economy due to the oilfield bust. Two years ago you couldn't find a person to clean but now people are trying hard to find ways to make extra money and it's pretty easy to find someone to come clean. My cleaning person works on her own so she keeps every dollar I pay her. My house is about 3000 sq ft, I have three full bathrooms, four bedrooms, some carpet, mostly tile, a formal living room, family room, separate game room, and an office. I pay her $100 per visit and she comes every other week.

I hired a housekeeper years ago when I was pretty broke. Now it is the best money I spend every two weeks and just work it into my monthly budget. It is worth it to me. If I ever do start to clean my ADD kicks in and I make a bigger mess than what I started with. I do loads of laundry throughout the week and do other light chores but not ever one big cleaning day. I run the vacuum and wipe down my bathroom every 3-4 days but I don't get too detailed.

I realized when my DD was around 4 years old that I was working full time (gone from home 13 hours a day with my commute) and spending what little precious time we had together on the weekends being frustrated and wearing myself out trying to get the house cleaned so we could start the week over and do it all again. My BFF was a SAHM and had someone cleaning her house weekly. Her cleaning lady had room in her schedule to fit us in once every two weeks. ONE OF THE BEST, MOST FREEING DECISIONS I HAVE EVER MADE. I cannot recommend it highly enough!!!

I do a little bit every day. I would hate to spend my days off cleaning. I have a rough schedule I keep to so each part of the house is cleaned during the week. I do leave big projects for the weekend but that doesn't happen every weekend. This is exactly what I do. I have things that get done each day (dishes, counters wiped down, general pick up, etc) and then each day I work on a different thing. It has made a huge difference and I find I am no longer a slave to spending my weekend cleaning. I have my scheduled worked out where Friday is my free night or sometimes I may "work ahead" depending on what is going on. It took some time to get into this routine but it has made a huge difference and both DH and I pitch in to work on it and are much happier.
