What is Tri-Rail? Is it easy to get on and off? If we are in Fort Lauderdale and want to go to Miami, should we take a bus or a taxi?? I *know* taxi will be more $$ but...are the buses hot? Do they have AC?? I have tons of questions. Main issue is that we didn't want to pay to rent a car because the Parking at hotel is like $40/day! I could just use that money for taxis or buses... or Tri-rail...? Thanks in advance for any suggestions/advice!! Going with DD, age 15, if that matters.

No...and unfortunately I don't know anything about the transportation down there. I am more the Disney area. On the map though, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami are pretty far apart and I can't imagine that a bus would be anywhere near to a short trip. And the traffic would slow it down even more. But then again, I really am unfamiliar with the area and the most time I spent down there is flying in and out of the airport.

I don't think people realize how big we are-I am in the middle of the state. It would take me a full day to drive to Pensacola. Like at least 9 hours. If I were to drive from Miami to Pensacola it would take over 14 hours. I drove to Ft. Benning in Georgia in half that time. From my house to Miami would be well over 6 hours.

I believe tri rail is the commuter train that runs through Miami and ft lauderdale bro ward county. I would try looking for info about the train schedules on either google or amtrack I do know the trains run on the same rails as amtrack. Traffic is horrible in Miami so it may be a great alternative. I used to live down there prior to tri rail. Now I'm up in Orlando. Hope that helps

Tri-Rail is a tri county commuter rail service. It runs from central Palm Beach County to the north and central Miami/Dade County (south). It is your best bet for traveling from county to county and there are shuttles from the airport to the train stations. Please keep in mind public transportation in general and especially busses in south Florida are horrible. The train stations are not in outstanding areas and have security but be aware and diligent of your surroundings. Broward County (Ft Lauderdale area) to central Miami is about 55 miles or sort of gross traffic. Not like traffic in the North East or California but still unpleasant.
It is easy to get on and off Tri-Rail but you will need transportation to get from the train station to your destination, and again the busses here are pretty dismal. There is the Metrorail in Miami which is a people mover going to main business centers like the major hospital complexes. Not sure about it as it has been years since I lived in Dade County. I would google both Tri and Metrorail for more information.
In all honesty to navigate South Florida your best bet would be to negotiate with the hotel on the parking fee and rent a car. Otherwise you will spend you entire visit coordinating and waiting for public transportation. Hope this helps.
