My nut bag mother in law sent my husband 4 Vicodin loose in an envelope through the mail. He is on a low dose of Vicodin for a herniated disc and sciatica issues. They spoke a few days ago and I guess she asked him how he was doing and he told her his back was sore as he waits for another MRI.
She asked him if his meds were working and he said that nothing helped and that he was dealing with the pain.
Lo and behold, she called him this morning and told him that she sent him "something" in the mail and to keep it private from me (but made no mention of what it was).
Like that's gonna happen....
She sent him 4 high dose Vicodin. Why she has high dose Vicodin, I have no clue!!
I'm thinking that it is probably illegal to mail someone loose Vicodin.

I believe it is illegal to send prescription medication through the mail. I learned this from a friend who needed to send her mom some meds. FEDEX told her that she needed to get some type of permit to send it through the mail. same with the other carriers.

I don't know if it is illegal but it wasn't too smart. Those envelopes go through machinery and they could have been crushed or gotten stuck.

I hope he's able to get across to her that she likely committed a felony/ies.
I also hope he feels better soon. Pain stinks.

I'm pretty sure mailing it isn't the only infraction there...

The mailing isn't the biggest issue, it would still be illegal for her to give him her prescribed drugs, regardless of HOW she gave them to him. And with a controlled substance like Vicodin, most likely a felony.

I just relayed the scenario to our county drug task force detective. He says 3-4 felonies right off the top of his head, and a misdemeanor or 2.

Someone I know mailed pot through the mail (don't get me started on how stupid that is) and got busted. She's lucky she didn't get caught. He probably ought to set her straight on not only the felonies she committed but also the fact that she told him to keep something from you. She's got a really big brass pair.... stupid brass pair.

Okay, no one is probably going to do anything with a crime as small as this, but given you use your real name and include where you live in your location, I would delete the OP after you change the title to something else.
It is clearly illegal and you have provided a great amount of detail should any law enforcement personnel who was bored decide to troll the net for infractions.
It would stink if your MIL caught flak outside the family for this.

So, are you going to turn her in? At first read I giggled at this, which if it wasn't a true-life situation it would be funny.
but then got to thinking it really is a serious predicament to be in. Waiting to hear back from my friend if the husband could be charged for receiving it. I'm guessing probably so.
Dang what a tough situation!!!! I'm so sorry, o/p!

It's illegal to give someone a controlled substance. Using the mail adds a Federal charge. Yikes! Someone needs to talk to your MIL!

Lolz
Of course it's illegal, even just giving them to him is illegal. But it's only four pills so I certainly wouldn't raise a stink about it.
I don't know what she thinks she's going to help by doing this, though, if he's already told her vicodin isn't working. Is she hoping four more will cure him? Regular vicodin, which you called "low dose", is 5mg of hydrocodone. Then there is vicodin 7.5, and hydrocodone 10mg. Not sure which one she sent but in any case it's not going to do much more than what he's got.
What a fruit loop

What a fruit loop If 4 pills is enough to charge her with multiple felonies, and possibly get him in trouble too, heck yea I'd be raising a stink.
If she's just trying to be helpful and isn't aware of what she actually did, then I'd be worried about her and would want to make sure she doesn't do it again.
If she knew what she was doing and obtained the pills illegally, I'd raise an even bigger stink.

You'd turn your MIL in for four vicodin? Maybe by "raise a stink" I guess we meant two different things. But whatever, my DH is a grown man and would tell her himself he doesn't want dusty crushed narcotics sent illegally through the mail so I wouldn't have to say a thing, nor would I except to laugh about it with my sister (we enjoy those MIL stories).

Ahh. Yes definitely different definition.
I would raise a stink WITH HER because I wouldn't want her to get in trouble in the future.
And by "I", I was meaning general I, not going rogue and calling the cops on her, behind his back.
Sorry for the confusion.

Ok, very good then! As you were. LOL thanks! Actually, knowing now what you were thinking, it's sort of a funny thought that I might be calling the cops to my very vanilla, Mennonite family's gatherings. Strongest stuff you'll find there is iced tea & key lime pie.

Now...would he actually be charged with it? I'd like to think not, on the mother's end as well. I agree with you that she likely didn't deliberately break the law.
I hope I wasn't misleading in my comments on this thread. I was answering the questions of whether what happened was illegal, not giving my opinion on what should happen. I certainly DON'T think MIL should be arrested or charged.

ask your friend about mens rea - guilty intent it's a crime on behalf of your MIL - not a for your husband - who had no knowledge of the package ask hilary - have to have guilty intent gina
