I'm sure you all know that the Democratic National Party had their servers broken into. Someone who called himself "Guccifer 2.0" but made off with DNC financial records, e-mails, research reports, and other documents. Security researchers who have examined the DNC breach have said that the infiltration appears to be the work of a Russian espionage unit. So they plan to spend about $800,000 on the RNC. If it is for real, that's disgusting. And yes, before it's asked, if the RNC does anything of the sort in Philadelphia, it's equally disgusting. Let the parties have their nominating conventions in peace and start the campaign afterwards.

For those of us disgusted by the whole "small hands" thing that the debates devolved into, it appears the Democrats think it is worthy of perpetuating -- which says a lot more about them.
Maybe my memory is failing me, but I do not recall hearing of shenanigans like this at past conventions. I'm not a party person, but I hope the Republicans don't stoop to this level at the Democratic convention.

I attended two nights of the DNC in Denver in 2008 - and stayed at a local hotel. If the Republicans had a presence there, it was completely unseen by me. There were pro-life protesters outside of the Pepsi Center - oh and I do seem to recall someone giving me pamphlet on clean coal at one point when I was walking around Denver.

Sure, Democrats had some spokespeople wandering around Tampa, Fla. But Republicans plan to bracket Democrats' Charlotte, N.C., convention with an unprecedented counter-convention right outside the gates of the Time Warner Cable Arena, where Democrats will gather after Labor Day. Thanks, Lucille, it appears both sides have done it to each other before. I guess they didn't get the same publicity because the candidates weren't as controversial? |

Some silly "gimmicks," sure, like the Go Trump Yourself kit alluded to above, with small hands and a self-tanner. (It's not clear to me where they plan to distribute these--looks like at "headquarters"?) But most of it seems like pretty standard stuff about having press conferences, being ready to respond to Republican speeches, etc. |

I agree that most was very standard stuff. The gimmicks sections were just plain stupid and I thought that should be below a major political party. Then I realized both parties are stooping to ridiculous levels to get people's attention. I honestly thought most of it was well thought out. Especially the part about watching for stupid comments and be prepared with statements.  |

So, I actually looked at all the pages. I agree that most was very standard stuff. The gimmicks sections were just plain stupid and I thought that should be below a major political party.  I did notice that a lot of the gimmicks section entries were in different font, and the bullet formatting was messed up in various places all through the document. I would hope that the gimmicks stuff was beneath either party, but now, who knows? |

I could (theoretically) hack your home network tomorrow and post a bunch of stuff that I claim was written by you. Not really - I'd have no idea how to do that - but someone certainly could. That's the point I'm making here. News agencies reporting that the documents were leaked is not the same thing as verification of their original source. |

If you haven't paid much attention before, this might not be old ground for you. The letter by a politician's name has come to represent more than just her or his political affiliation. It has come to also mean the very real likelihood of what his or her vote will be on any given subject. As in politicians are far less likely to vote their conscience (or their district/state's concerns) than they are to vote their party ticket. Maybe if politicians started to break out more from adhering so closely to the party lines, it wouldn't matter so much what letter is there. If this was already obvious to you, please just disregard.  Welcome to the "I've lost a lot of respect for our government [officials] club." We are a rapidly growing community. |

It's like people cease to have their own identity. If they have an R before their name they're going to vote a certain way, and the Ds are going to hate them. If they have a D before their name they're going to vote a certain way, and the Rs are going to hate them.
Maybe it's just me, I don't know. When I took that quiz that was supposed to tell you which candidate you were most in agreement with, I was split evenly between Rs and Ds. I suppose that could be a big reason why I don't understand the strict party line thing.
(no offense against any strictly partisan folk - just because I don't understand it doesn't mean you're a bad person)
