and I just read that two 17 year olds (not connected) have died there, and someone has stolen a whole cash dispenser. This is the first time he has worked a festival (he's booked to do several over the summer) and it's the biggest annual one in Scotland. I'm hoping he hasn't had to deal with either of the above situations. The assumption is that the kids died from drugs. I hate so much to hear about this sort of thing; you send your kid off to an event that's meant to be fun, and hope that they're not stupid enough to take anything that's offered to them. How the hell do you ever deal with that? And I really hope DS wasn't guarding the cash dispenser...

Is he at T in the Park?
It's only the first day, isn't it?

It is T in the Park Sam . And yes, it is only the first day, although he went up yesterday. I got a report via his dad that he worked until 1am this morning, and that he is sleeping on a camp bed in some kind of army hut! I don't know what that means exactly. He was hoping to hear a couple of the bands that he really likes (Stone Roses and Red Hot Chili Peppers) even if he can't actually watch the sets.

Lucky boy, great experience and better that he's working it than partying at it!! My sister worked Glastonbury a couple of years and she had a great time.....away from the overdoses and the ATMs!!! Plus, if he's in an army hut, he's better off than being in a tent!!

Sam, he got the chance to work Glastonbury this year, but he and his dad were in California at the same time. It wasn't too difficult a choice for him! flute4peace, I haven't heard a single peep from him. I think he'll be home on Monday, but I have no idea when. He's pretty independent and also a sensible kid, so I'm not worrying about him - much.

My husband was one of the National Guard members sent to keep peace many years ago when Evel Knievel was making the attempt to jump the Snake River. It was mostly young people and lots of drinking, drugs, etc. It was not one of his favorite assignments. There was a death there which was unusual in our area in the 60's. Lots of fights, arrests, etc. Not a fun place to be.
I would think no news is good news from your DS.

He'll be fine - I can well understand why you're worried but you know deep down he's ok. This bit of parenting sucks - too old to stop them doing stuff ( and you want them to have fun), but they still seem so YOUNG.
My just finished lower 6th former is off to Reading next month - I totally get your anxiety.

sparkyduchess (love your username BTW!), DS is going to be working Reading too. The company he works for is a bit disorganised, and they have told him they have 1200 staff going to Reading, and are still trying to fix accommodation for them all! The organisation and administration of these large festivals is mind-boggling. And as an aside, as a British Pea, are you aware we're having a get together soon? gar and JoP are organising it for us all. Come along!

Omg, 1200?? That sounds mad, but I can see how enormous numbers of staff would be needed. I'm just about recovering from the boy doing his DoE gold practice expedition this week, after the previous week's group had to be airlifted to safety...the whole 'letting them grow up ' thing is hard. Rewarding and lovely, but hard. You sound like you're a year or two ahead of me. A get together would be lovely - I'm a long term lurker who took aeons to join in, if the gathering is somewhere I can get to, I'd love to come . I'm in the northwest (Cheshire), although born and raised in Glasgow

I live in Wishaw although I hate to admit it, as the town is such a dump these days.

I will add your name to the group message so you can read what's been said up until now...if that's how it works! Currently all we've done is add our name and location to a map and realised that we couldn't be more spread out if we tried!!

How the hell do you ever deal with that? I don't know... that's when you just have to hope that what you've taught them is enough, knowing full well that sometimes it isn't or that it gets forgotten or pushed aside because of peer pressure or they make bad decisions. That's almost the hardest part of parenting - that even when they're adults, you never stop worrying/caring.

That's terrible to hear. My 17 year old DD loves gigs and music festivals but you hear so many awful things about them. I just read an article a coupe of days ago about rampant sexual assault, groping, and rape at festivals and how ill equity the security and organizers are to deal with it. In fact they prefer to brush it under the rug and pretend it doesn't happen:(

Parenting teenagers: when you get to pray that some of what you said went in & stayed in & will be remembered even under the influence! That said, the best advice we gave ds this week was "if a lion chases you, you don't have to run faster than everyone else, just faster than the slowest person"

stargazer love the advice about being chased by a lion :-) lesley I am sure that your DS will have a great time and be absolutely fine. Of course if I were in your shoes I would be worried too - you can't help it can you. My 19 year old son is in Magaluf this week and I worry about drunken brawls (he is not one for fighting), quad bike accidents (he has been warned not to go on one), falls from balconies, muggings etc but I know he is a sensible boy and will just have a great time.

So very sad to hear of the death of 2 teenagers too, an event that should have been full of fun and entertainment has lead to tragic losses. I feel so sad for the families.

lesley , did you hear from your boy - presumably all's well? I haven't heard directly from him, but he did send his dad a selfie and he looked rather tired! He said he is tired and cold, but he was off-duty when the Stone Roses were playing, so he got to see them. And he probably isn't any colder or more tired than most of the people there, but at least he's getting paid for it.
