And I'm going crazy. I just told him the speed limit is 55, he said, I know, I'm going 50. . Its a country road, I'd be going 60 but of course I can't tell him that

Let him drive slower, as long as he is not impeding traffic. It's better than 90 in a 70. Yep,my oldest got pulled for that. She had to do traffic school and the office made her do 10 hours of community service.

I just have to adjust so we leave earlier when he's driving.

We put a big fat yellow STUDENT DRIVER sticker on the back of the car and it helps keeping the suburban tailgaters off. What I would give to live in the county with plentiful farm-to-market and oil-top roads for her to practice on. Deep breaths. He will get it.

OMG I was the one who had to teach my son to drive! How I did not pull all my hair out, I will never know!
I began to take a book to read in the car or play on my phone so I would not over criticize him when he would do things different that I would have.
Good luck!

It will get better. When DS got his learners we went out and he was taking the corners and curves way too fast. Scared the crap out of me!! Once they get the hang of it, it gets better.

Oh yeah, that drove me nuts too, but not as much as the Peas who reamed me out because they deemed his going 5mph under the speed limit to be dangerous for other (leadfoot) drivers such as themselves.

It's not easy being the passenger No it's not! DS1 drove about 3 hours total of a 8 hour drive last week (an hour to and 2 hours back). The entire time, he's barely, just barely going 70. I wanted to tell him to go a little faster, just a little bit. But I had to bite my tongue and let DH dish out the best advice - it's better to go the speed limit or a little under while on the learner's permit than to start speeding right off the bat. When I took over driving, I was going almost 80. I wanted to make up for lost time! Good thing neither teen pays much attention to my driving. As soon as they were in the backseat, they had their noses buried in their phones.

I'm the opposite and telling DD to go slower, it's terrifying being a passenger in the car with my DD - I want her to be 3 again or maybe 5 since 3 was pretty awful/bratty year/phase.

I wouldn't be making my kid do 50 MPh on his second day of having a permit. He doesn't have the experience to know what to do at that speed if something goes wrong.

I would normally agree with you, but here they take drivers ed before they get their permit. He's already had 6+ hours of driving plus at least double that observing, including driving on the same roads we're driving on, during drivers ed. these are all country roads too, very little traffic, no rain, during the day, yada yada. We'll build up to the trickier stuff......when I'm ready for it

My DD is 16 and I'm still not comfortable enough for her to get a license. I have major anxiety every time I drive with her. We live in a very urban area, think 5 lanes of traffic all speeding 50 with multiple stop lights. I just praise her up and down for not tailgating other drivers and taking her time. I would rather her be too slow than drive too fast.

We live in the country (as I assume you do) so we drove in my parents town for a little while first He's driven between the towns, but at about 40 in a 55. There are plenty of places for other cars to pass and tractors doing 15 isn't an uncommon occurrence, so I'd rather he go at the speed he is comfortable at.

A whole 6+ hours, eh? Speed Limits are maximum safe speeds, not minimum. Let him drive at a speed that is comfortable for him and still within the posted safe speed. Now is the time for your DS to develop good driving habits. Instead of rushing him, take this opportunity to reconsider your own driving habits.

My DD finished up driver's ed this morning and went for her learner's permit this afternoon. It was hard to not laugh when the driver's ed teacher told me that DD needed to watch her speed because when I have ridden with DD, she stayed 5 miles under the speed limit and it was *killing* me. That driver's ed teacher would hate riding with me!!
So, OP, I feel your pain. I have been telling myself it's better that she start slow. Since her father and I both have lead feet, she'll be speeding up eventually, I'm sure.

My DS was a pretty good drive, actually very cautious. However, when making a left turn onto a new street and there was a center divider - he would cut the turn and almost hit the divider more times than I could count. I would panic nearly everytime.
Somehow my DH got him to be more mindful about it and he changed the habit. Whew...thank goodness.

Anyhow, it was just a light hearted vent to other moms who I thought would understand. Of course I'm only letting him drive places, speeds and conditions we feel he's ready for. Nor did I tell him to speed or even drive faster than he's comfortable with.

@johnnysmom, don't take it personal. Teaching your child to drive is one of the most anxiety inducing things I have ever done. I am paranoid and afraid riding in the passenger seat. Every time I get in the car with her, I pray that we are safe, and I'm sure you do too. It's hard giving up that kind of control when you know it would take you a lot less time to get from point A to point B if you were driving. Safe travels to you.
