Oh my hell. I hate the ones that require the voice prompts. Okay, I get it, I have a southern accent. But jeez, if you are going to have a voice recognition program, you are going to have to train it to understand everyone. Particularly if you are a business that is based IN THE SOUTH. Because if you can't understand me, what do the people with the heavy accents do?? Probably break their phones.

LOL you are not the only one! In fact, I usually put my finger over my "current best choice" - which may change as the recording goes on - so then at the end I just press whatever button my finger ended up on. I usually hold up the number of fingers that is the best choice! LOL Oh, and if it works, I keep pressing zero. You are bound to get a real person if the system allows.

Just as bad are the automated ones that call YOU. I keep getting one on my landline voicemail - "is Fred there?" I actually picked up the phone the other day and got that. I said DO NOT CALL AGAIN. Never expecting anything. It says "ok we will remove you from our list". Who knew!

We've been getting the automated ones that call our land line for the past few weeks-- at least 3-4 times a week!! Random numbers from Oklahoma City, the Chicago suburbs, etc. All places where we do not know anyone who would actually be calling us. I'm thinking they MUST be political ads, or something-- But whenever we do answer the phone, there's never anyone there. It's as annoying as those automated phone systems!! (well, ALMOST as annoying as those, anyway) I will have to try the "DO NOT CALL US ANYMORE" thing on them and see what happens!

I had a terrible cough for a couple of weeks and found that I never got connected to a human as fast as when the system couldn't understand me. "I'm sorry, I don't understand you, let me connect you to a representative." And when you don't have a cough, try Googling "talk to a human." There are a ton of sites that give you alternate 800 numbers or tips on how to bypass the system and get connected directly to a human. Thanks for suggestion! And thanks @dknitter, I deal with accessibility in the physical environment for work. Hearing issues are sometimes raised, now I'll remember about speech too.

I'm another 0000000 pusher. If it works, great. If not, at least I tried!

Happens to me all the time. I usually just wind up repeating "customer service" over and over again or repeatedly pressing 0.

I hate them too. Especially the ones that ask you for your account number and then as soon as you get the rep they ask you again.
They are extremely cost efficient. We pay pennies for a call that goes thru the automated system and something like $7 if you call us and speak to a rep
