The wonderful era of social media. Someone took time to post that rant, and others to comment. Now we're talking about it too. How much time was consumed by this?
Lol, totally and completely counting myself as one of the lemmings jumping into that pot, Kettle.

Donning my flame resistant suit......my kid routinely rides on the side of the cart, I don't see it as a big deal. Of the things he could be doing standing on the cart where I can (and do) keep a close eye on him is pretty low risk. That said, I also don't think it's a big deal that the guy said something to her or the kid (assume he wasn't a total dick). I'm also not sue happy. My kid rode on the front, not the side. The side would make it tip.

For those of you saying that you allow your children to do it and you wouldn't sue the store if your child got hurt, that may not be your choice. If your child gets hurt and needs medical attention, your insurance company may go after the store.

My almost 21 year old still tries to ride on the front of the cart. Bless his heart. DH (52) likes to embarass the kids every now and again, and has done this on occasion. The look on DS17's face is priceless

My almost 21 year old still tries to ride on the front of the cart. Bless his heart. Lol. You should see my 24-year-old in Ikea when we've got one of those flat dolly things that you use for the furniture flat-packs. He loves to get that thing going down one of the big furniture warehouse aisles and then jump on. oy. However, we usually go on a weekday morning when there aren't a lot of people there. This last time we had to go on a Saturday because of his job. So he couldn't run the cart. lol I have let my kids ride on the end of the cart (the end opposite where I'm pushing) but not for long because it was too heavy for me to push. I never let them ride on the side, not because it occurred to me to worry about it tipping over but mostly because it's difficult to push and I probably thought I'd bump them into something. I never let them ride inside though (no room for my purchases) and never let them stand up in the seat. I'm also not sue-happy for something that would be my fault. I was walking through the Target parking lot one day recently and passed a woman putting her purchases in the back of her van. Her maybe-two-year-old was in the seat of the cart. The woman had her back to the girl while she was rearranging stuff in her van -- so in other words it was more than a few seconds that she wasn't looking. As I passed the little girl just stood up in the seat! I ran over just as the woman was turning around. She looked a bit startled and I apologized for running over but said that the mother gene in me reacted to a kid standing in the cart. She did say thank you.

Shopping cart injuries are a big deal. About 25,000 children a year go to the emergency department for them. Usually with head injuries. Nearly 20 years ago, I was the parent of one of those "25,000 a year". I had been a very safe parent to that point but was in a hurry one day and put my daughter into a shopping cart seat at Office Max without a safety belt. I looked away "for just one second" (isn't that what they all say) and turned around at the very moment she was falling headfirst onto the floor. I picked up her little body... She was not crying. She was not moving. Her little shoes just fell right off her feet. I ran to the front of the store with this floppy little baby yelling for help... It was terrifying. Imagine how sick I was with guilt. PLEASE USE CARTS SAFELY! No matter what and every time!!

I rode on the front of the cart as a kid...and I still remember slipping and catching my lip on the end of the cart. It swelled up so that it stuck out further than my nose. I tell my kids about it EVERY time they try to get on the cart. And they roll their eyes EVERY time, but don't do it.

I saw a cart fall over with a little girl in it at TJ Maxx the other day. The little girl cried and screamed but I saw her walking around the store later, so I think she was okay. Scared the crap out of me, though.
And I was grocery shopping yesterday and didn't stop my nephew (6) from riding on the side of the cart. Just never thought to stop him. Oops. I'll do better next time.

I'm sure you lost 20 years of your life that day.

I am extremely embarrassed to share this story but I did it in hopes that you younger moms will learn from my mistake. My daughter was sitting in the seat of the cart. She was not riding on the side or front, she was not in the basket standing, nor on the bottom when this happened. She was just a year old and a climber and I knew that (she could climb out of her crib at a very, very young age) but at that split second when I noticed there was no safety belt, I decided it was only going to be a couple minutes and she would be fine. Again, please use carts safely every single time.

Well call me a bad parent.. all three of mine probably stood up one time or another. I was vigilant by making sure I always had control of the cart. I never did once let go of the cart. If I knew it was a time I couldn't I told whatever kid I had at the time to sit down. I was pissed one day when a Target worker started talking to my kiddo about sitting down. I was right there with my hands on the cart. I think they should have said something to me, not the kiddo. Like "miss, we have a rule that we don't want kids standing in the cart".... but anyways, I do see kids all over carts and moms/dads not even around or watching and I cringe and basically I would say these same parents probably let their kids run in the street without looking and who knows what else.

Whenever that very first out-of-hospital check up was. He was kicking his legs and waving his arms and the doctor said "you're going to have to watch this one, okay?" lol. She told me "The ERs are full of kids who have 'never done it before'." -- She was right about my ds also. He walked amazingly early, climbed the bookshelves (which WERE attached to the wall), swung on the curtains.. omg, there's a reason my two kids are so far apart in age (4 years). He never had much chance to fall out of the grocery cart though, because I did my very best never to take him shopping. sheesh...

The thing is, if a store employee asks you not to do something, you should have enough respect for them to not do it. I admit, I'm the mom that would probably allow her kid to stand on the end of the cart. I have in the past. And I'm not the suing type either. But I have enough respect for employees to follow the store rules.

When my DS was little he was in the cart sitting down and I had an employee tell me it was not OK for him to be in there, it was unsafe. I understood her point and took DS out and just had to hold onto his hand.
I really do believe everyone should have to work a retail or customer orientanted job at some point in their life.
