I so want to call this person out - Shopping Cart Related

That's why I don't do Facebook. I couldn't keep my mouth shut on something like that. The woman and her backers are idiots.

Sad that so many are supporting her. I agree she would immediately sue if her child got hurt.

Meh. I don't think it's a big deal. In the grand scheme the target guy should have just observed in case of accident and stayed out of it. We rode around on carts when we were little. It was one of the fun things about being a kid.

I am so glad I grew up in the 70's, but in this sue happy world, I think the Target employee was doing what he was taught to do.  When I think of how many cars I was in and never wore my seatbelt?  Ugh, now that was luck.  

It is a liability issue for Target, so the employee is correct in asking the mother to have the child sit down

I don't think there is anything wrong with politely pointing out to her that the poor kid is probably just following rules.... "Oh that must have been annoying. But I guess management have probably instructed all their staff to do that due to health and safety concerns. They don't want to be sued if a child gets hurt haha!"

ETA: It amazes me when I see things like this on Facebook. Someone posts something stupid like that and everyone gets right behind the poster. Usually all it takes is for one person to point out the opposing argument and then other people come out of the woodwork to agree.

Donning my flame resistant suit......my kid routinely rides on the side of the cart, I don't see it as a big deal. Of the things he could be doing standing on the cart where I can (and do) keep a close eye on him is pretty low risk.

That said, I also don't think it's a big deal that the guy said something to her or the kid (assume he wasn't a total dick). I'm also not sue happy.

When my son was little I let him ride on the side of the cart. Right up until the day the cart fell over on top of him. I don't know who cried more, me or him. Shopping carts just aren't weighted or designed to support a heavily unbalanced load, including a 40 pound child hanging off one side.

I think something important to remember is that Target replaced all of their carts not too long ago. They are not metal carts, but lightweight plastic ones.

This is great in the parking lot, if someone leaves their cart free in the lot, because when it hits your car, it will do less damage than the metal carts. However, it makes them even more prone to tip when there is an uneven load like the weight of a child on one side of the cart.

So perhaps they became more vigilant about this in some stores after the switch?

Why are you assuming the OP post was talking about target? The past I saw that mentioned target first was the one about a girl running around.

Regardless of what kind of cart it was, the employee was doing his job. Sad that people don't understand that.

See, I couldn't let that go by without responding. Any wonder why I don't use Facebook? Just because the crowd is being swayed in the poster's direction doesn't make it right. And if one of their sons worked at a store and came home with a story about warning a woman with a child hanging on the cart, they would be just as up in arms over it on the side of the employee.

I worked in a grocery store for 7 years and saw some pretty nasty shopping cart injuries. Mostly head injuries and carts that toppled over on kids who were riding on the side. I did see some really gruesome mangled fingers and toes that got caught up in the wheels where kids were riding on the bottom part. I heard horror stories from other stores about kids (mostly girls) getting their hair caught in the wheels and chunks of scalp getting ripped out-so glad that I never witnessed that particular scenario. I am glad that I saw all that before I had kids, because that was one kind of injury I could make sure to prevent. Those mangled hands and feet and unconscious or screaming kids who had a cart topple over on them are hard to get out of your mind once you've seen them.

People are stupid, and no matter how vigilant a retailer tries to be, they'll get people like the OP saw that want to get all huffy when asked not to let their kids ride anywhere on the cart but in the seat. I wish they'd hang up a "if you or your children ride in or on carts, you do so at your own risk" signs and fight every stupid lawsuit from the cart riders; but sadly, they just see it as easier and cheaper to pay settlements.

  Who said anything about sending kids to the bathroom alone?

I've seen carts tip over on kids who were riding on the end, too.
