I moved to a new building. I got my old classroom emptied by the last day of school and then moved it all to my new classroom. That was the middle of June and I haven't done a thing since. We moved into a new house in the middle of May so I have spent the summer getting my new house organized and getting our old house cleaned out so we can sell it.

We have been off since June 7th. Teachers go back August 8th and the students return August 11th. We are moving to a brand new campus sometime before the 8th (crossing fingers.) I have my room loosely packed and ready for the move. We are in charge of our own move (and we have to move everything in our classrooms.) This summer I have been streamlining my materials and paperwork. I am working out my curriculum maps and pacing guides. We have upgraded a couple of our programs and so that all needs to be adjusted and reworked. I am prepping the 1st month and beginning of the year stuff because who knows how that is going to work with a move. We also received 4 books to read over the summer from our principal. I have been working in very small increments so I have been able to enjoy my summer with my family as well. That's crazy! Do you work in a private school or nonunion state? At least you'll know where your belongings are at. So much gets lost in the moves.

Nothing...NADA..zilch~~ We don't go back till the Tuesday after Labor Day. We have a meeting about our behavior system in a week. Then we as a team will meet two more times. I have enough to keep me busy this summer with Union issues (I am the president of our union) I'm our new president, too. We negotiate this year as well. It'll be interesting to see how union issues and my teaching work together.

I moved to my current position, media specialist (librarian/tech support and instruction) two years ago after being an elementary classroom teacher for 20 years. My summer to-do list as well as work brought home during the year has been drastically reduced and it makes me (and my family) so happy! This summer, I am completing some grad classes to move over to the final lane on our salary schedule (Masters+60). Hoping to finish by the end of September which is our district's cut off for moving on pay scale. Then I'll be at the max. A few years ago, I set a goal to be on the far lane by this year so I want to get there. It's costly to take the courses but it pays off in the long run. I'm also getting a new clerk this year so I've been cleaning up some documents to help her learn the position. Wow +60. That's amazing. We only go to +15 and I'm at 29. No more educational classes for me. I'd start losing money and taking away from my son's college funds. I wish we had +30 or even 45.

I have been off for 2 weeks. So far I have worked on my house and went on my first vacation in 4 years. That gives me 2 weeks to read 6 books for work. I also need to create a math curriculum for a grade level. Then I am back to official work. When did summer become 4 weeks?Wow! Do you get longer breaks throughout the year? We got out here on June 26 (or whatever that Friday was) and don't go back till after Labor Day. So I'm sure our teachers haven't thought much yet about school. Except I know the 3rd grade teachers have probably been worrying about who is going to get the really difficult kids that were in last year's 2nd grade. That was a REALLY hard year for the 2nd grade teachers. I'm a substitute so the only thing I've been thinking about is that I'm friends with two of those 3rd grade teachers and I always sub for them when I can and this year I'm dreading it because of last year's 2nd grade. ugh. One of the 3rd grade teachers has young kids so I end up subbing for her when her kids are sick. Last year she had a really difficult class so we're all hoping that the principal will give this teacher a break this year as a reward for surviving last year. That's what I've been thinking about. Our students have the same break as your students. The summer is shrinking for teachers. I spent the first week of break writing curriculum for the district. I laughed when I pulled into the district parking lot on the first day of vacation. It was completely full. Training that would have previously been done during the school year has also been pushed into the summer due to lack of substitutes. We used to go back the last week of August for training. My first day is August 1st. To be fair, only 18 people in the district will be back to work by that date. I just happen to be involved in a lot this year.

I go back August 8 and the students return on the 22nd. I went to one four hour PD. I signed up for several, then cancelled. I have been to the beach and I'm about to go on vacation with my parents. I need to do a few things for my student organization, but I won't be doing anything for my classroom until I know what I'm teaching next year. When do they tell you what you're teaching!? It's in our contract that teachers find out no later than the last day of school, so they can prep (how nice, right? during their unpaid summer time) over the summer. SaveSaveSome years teachers get moved grade levels after the year has started. When class sizes don't come out to be what is predicted, people need to move. We have no contractual guarantees about placement. I never heard of that in a contract. I learn so much here.

I thought you meant your entire summer vacation was four weeks! omg, you guys need more of a break than that! -- Yes, I heard from teachers that a lot of training has been put in the summer. Their theory was that the county didn't want to pay substitutes, but there is also a shortage of good subs, which is why I can work every single day if I want to. But it's not fair to teachers to *require* them to go to training in the summer. It would be nice if it was an option, then those who wanted to could do it to get it out of the way. But not requiring it. Summer is for being with family and trying not to think about school.

I know the site (not changing schools) but not my grade level(s) or subject(s). Been trying to find out from my principal. She has said that I MIGHT be all math grades 6-8 but she is still working on the schedule. She's trying to make every class self contained grades k-8 but I do not have a multiple subject credential so I cannot be self contained. I am only authorized to teach math and science. If I am only math, I will be THE only math teacher for grades 6-8. A bit scary as ALL of my schools 6-8 grade math test scores and grades are attached to my name.

Our summer is getting shorter and shorter and we are required to take unpaid trainings in the summer. What irritates me is that they FILL our days before school starts with trainings and meetings. They give us NO time to set up our classrooms or do planning. Since we cannot get into our rooms until training starts, that only leaves us evenings and weekends. No time to rest or relax. So for about 2 weeks, we have NO LIFE at all outside of school and we are mentally and physically exhausted by the time students start. Clearly it's been a while since the people who plan all of this have actually had a classroom to set up...

Our union has bargained that ONE of the two days before school starts is for a site meeting (that can be no longer than 2 hours) and working in the classroom. The other day, the district can fill as they see fit for workshops/trainings. The district gets to pick which day they would like to use and they are to schedule it between 8 and 2:30. We get an hour lunch in there on our own. The district used to provide lunch for us. We have 3 non student contact days that the district gets to use for whatever training they want to during the year. One day each trimester.

Additional training is required to keep your certificate, but no increase for them. Step increases from year to year are so tiny that it doesn't pay to stay in the profession, either.

Yes, I teach at a small private school in a non union state. We basically get to pack, coordinate and move ourselves. Technically our parents from last year are asked to help us. So far I have 1 dad and 1 mom available. I am lucky that I have a big family to help me out. My scheduled move date is in 1 week if we have occupancy from the city. **Fingers crossed**
I hate to complain. We are blessed to be moving into a beautiful new facility. I love my job. It's just all this unknown that is causing me a bit of stress. I can't wait until it is all done and we are enjoying the new year.

We go back the first week of August.
The first four weeks, I worked on curriculum planning (paid). Then I spent time working on things for my TPT store. I made a book about teaching world languages with authentic resources & technology, a unit on sports, and I converted a bunch of my paper items to Google drive versions.
I'm teaching newspaper this year, so I've also spent time looking at ideas for setting that class up.

I'm a substitute so I don't have to do anything other than a few on line trainings next month. We didn't get out until June 23rd and go back after Labor Day. I think we still have 8 weeks left. I finished the last 3 weeks of school in a class and just threw everything into my sub bag, so I need to go through that at some point.

First year teachers are making what they will make for the duration of their career. Existing teachers will never get a raise. I go back on August 2, the kids return on the 4th. I have done some math workshops, some curriculum writing, spent a few days mentoring new teachers, and my room is ready to go. All I have left to do is label my mailboxes and other stuff when I get a class list.

Even so, I am not sure I would have gone down this path if there were no upward mobility. Are there few job opportunities in your area?

I can qualify for a yearly bonus if I am one of the top teachers in my district as determined by state testing. Last year that bonus was $200 before taxes. Lol! The more teachers who do well, the lower the bonus. The pot of bonus money is divided equally.

I won't see an increase other than any raises for a few more years. No raise this year.

I took a 20 hour PD course the second week of summer break. Other than that, NOTHING school-related and I'm LOVING IT!! I'll be moving to 5th grade math for 2016-2017 school year. I've taught 2nd and 3rd grades for 20 years and was so in need of a change. It should be a great year!
I've been maxed out on the pay scale for several years (lanes and steps), but a new contract was negotiated in June where there is opportunity for increase in salary. Of course, most of the coursework is out-of-pocket. Since it all factors into retirement it is worth it to forge ahead, take the courses, and bank the extra bucks.
I start August 24th and students return on the 29th.
For all of you who are working so hard, remember to take time for yourself! It took me many years to realize that it's okay to turn off the teacher part of my life during breaks. The school year is brutal. Take this time to recharge and focus on you.

For the first time in 35 years I am not thinking or worrying about going back to school. I am enjoying my first summer as a retiree more than I ever imagined I would. Best wishes to all returning teachers. I know how stressful this time of year can Beas you prepare for the new school term. I loved teaching, but being a retired teacher is soon much better! This school year I am going to Romania ( habitat for humanity mission) and to Israel in January. I am tagging along on a trip for Seminary students.... It will be an incredible learning adventure!

And dept chair thought the principal would tell me, so no one did. Thankfully, I read the heading of a class roster!

This is where I was when the change came to play. When I say no raise this means no step raises, no lane raises no cost of living raises. In fact my salary has decreased over the years due to insurance rates. What we are seeing is teachers who are less willing to give free time for clubs, after school activities, etc. More teachers are working bell to bell. Any extra things the admin wants done are being refused unless time is given in the day. The only things I do on my time are things that make a direct impact on my students. I sneak that stuff home and do it. I will not do reports for admin, pointless book studies, safety videos, etc... on my own time. I hVe also noticed that teachers are unwilling to buy for their classrooms. We were told by admin we all needed specific information on a bulletin board last year in every room. First question was, "When will borders and background and paper be provided?" "When is time be allotted in the day to complete this?"

I also had some home projects I wanted to accomplish, but I've been putting those off, too. Last year was just so horrific, I've needed every ounce of rest and recuperation this summer. I so hope this change is going to be great for you!! I'd hate to see you leave teaching because your love of your profession does come through on your posts!
