DD and are having a little vacation this week. We're way nervous this is a big adventure for us.
The first hurdle is just getting to our Manhatten hotel? Anyone one with experience care to chime in? I downloaded and signed up with uber, I'm hoping that helps us get around a bit.
We're also up for public transport like subways if that's not too hard. I know it's less money.
UPDATE: we had an absolute blast!!! We figured out subways and buses easily, and went ALL OVER greater NY. Never used a cab or anything but public transport. That one week metro pass paid for itself many times over. We both had one carry on size case each, and it wasn't that hard on the subways. DD carried my bags for me on the many stairs in and out of the subways, to save my back.
We: *spent two fabulous days on Randall's Island enjoying Sia, Arcade Fire, Silversun Pickups, Alabama Shakes, LCD Soundsystem, and more!! *Coney Island *statue of Liberty and Ellis Island *walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, lots of fun *went into flushing, Queens, I enjoyed the museum, and DD loved the park at the site of the World's Fair, with a huge fountain which was welcome to play in during a heat wave *Saw a Broadway Play(Fiddler) *Found a place that made gluten free vegan pizza:) *Explored all over Central Park. I put well over 50 miles in walking during the week, in addition to our subway and bus travel
there are still a lot of things I'd like to see and do, especially museums. But it was a negotiation to get DD to agree to the Queens Museum and Ellis Island, so I'll save for later.
Thank you you to those who shared their tips here on this thread! It really helped.

I have always taken a yellow cab. Make sure you get one from the official taxi stand. It's a flat rate and with tip and tolls about $70.
I do use Uber a lot in the city...or a cab. Most of my trips are work and they pick up all the transportation tab. Last December my girlfriend came with me and she figured out the bus and subways...took a day and then she was golden. I haven't attempted it myself...I am seriously directionally challenged. And, since work is paying, not very motivated. :-)

Where is your hotel in Manhattan?
The Airtrain to the subway works for many places. There's also a shuttle to Grand Central if you are on the east side. A taxi is pretty pricey because there is a flat rate. Uber in NYC is an adventure that I won't do again. I'll do Uber in some other cities, not midtown Manhattan!
The subways are not hard at all. There are apps that make it easier, or you can just use the public transportation option for navigation on Google maps. It will not just tell you what subway to take but the direction and what time the next train should arrive. If you will be there for several days, you can just buy an unlimited weekly pass.

Oh.. part of the reason I am anti-Uber is surge pricing. I know it cost me more than a yellow cab would have which ticked me off! Also ticked me off that the driver did not listen to me and tried to take a longer route. Dd had similar experiences.

Since you're open to public transportation, I would consider the AirTrain. It's $5 per person from the airport the Jamaica LIRR train station. From there you can get the LIRR right into Penn Station. It's a separate fare which varies depending on the time of day but $10 at the most per person. It takes about 40 minutes from the airport to Penn Station which is at 32nd & 7th and will cost $30 at the most for both of you.
have a wonderful time!!

Just follow the crowd when you get off of the LIRR into Penn Station. It could seem a little intimidating at first. I have a hard time seeing where I'm going because I'm so darned short. Have a great trip!! *Jealous* NY is my hometown and I miss it so very much!

We called a taxi to go to the zoo.... 40.00. I downloaded the uber app and returned to our hotel for less than $19.00!

Uber Pool from La Guardia to Manhattan was only $35 for two of us. If Uber Pool is available from JFK at the time you get in, I highly recommend it. You may possibly end up sharing the ride with someone else headed to the same general area, and if you do, it will be even cheaper.

I took a taxi the last time we went. Flat rate.
While I was comfortable navigating the subway (first time in my life) while we were there, I didn't want to do that WITH all my luggage. Thus, I paid the extra for a taxi for that reason.

As a New Yorker I have done that trip many times and always found cabs easy and relatively inexpensive -- luggage in the trunk and away you go. $60 isn't that much for the convenience. Just be sure to walk outside and get in the yellow cab line; do NOT go with unauthorized individuals who stand around in the baggage area saying, "Need a cab?" They are private drivers and charge a lot more than a regular cab.

Sister and her 2 DIL just made the trip. TOok a cab to the hotel and it was $65 and 45 minutes. She felt he meandered and took advantage of the travelers. On the return home, the hotel called a "car service" and they paid $40 and it took 20 minutes. (IIRC)

Glad you had a great visit. We have a girls' trip next month. My oldest DD's first, my second, my sisters third, and my younger DD's 4 or 5th trip. We are staying in the city which younger DD has never done. I have been working on our schedule for a month!

I've been to NYC several times, but always with someone who knew everything. I'm hoping to go either on my own or with someone who doesn't know anymore than I know sometime this year or early next and I'm making detailed notes. tThank you! OP, thank you so much for asking this question and then updating after your trip. I'm taking notes and bookmarking! Marcy

Good for you! I'm a subway girl myself (had a 1 hour commute to the Bronx for middle and high school).
Now I am blazing new subway trails in Los Angeles. Yes, there are subways here!
