I've always carried my card in my wallet, because it proves that I am insured for any car I drive. But today my ds got his drivers license (YAY!) and the lady at the DPS told me it should be kept in the car. But then if I drive my mom's car or a friend's car, I don't have proof of insurance on me. I'm in Texas, if that makes any difference.
So, where do you keep your insurance card?
And a little vent: we have Travelers insurance. We have three vehicles. I have three insurance cards - one for each vehicle. Every other insurance company I've ever had has given us ONE card per person, with all vehicles listed. So annoying that they don't all do it the same way.

I keep one card in each car, and have an extra one for my wallet.

Mine is in my wallet, I think dh keeps it in the car. If someone borrows my car, I put the card in the car.
We get two per vehicle, but I can print more. Can you print another?

In my glove box. We have USAA and they issue a separate card for each car.

So if you keep it in the car, then what if you get pulled over or have an accident while driving someone else's car? I always thought the driver had to prove they are insured, not just that the car is insured.
Yes I can print an extra one from the website apparently. (I just asked dh, didn't know I could do that)

Both.
Our insurance sends us 6 cards every time the policy renews.
There is one in my car and one in my wallet, one in my husband's car and one in his wallet, and two in our file cabinet at home.
All of the cards have all of the drivers and all of the vehicles carried on our policy listed.

The lady at the DPS was nice, but seemed surprised when I told her the card is not kept in my car. I've always kept it in my wallet, and whenever I've been in the car with someone who was pulled over they had theirs in their wallet, too. I've never seen anyone get one out of the glove box. This is new to me. But now that I know I can print another copy I'll keep one in the car just in case.

On my phone. But I always keep a copy in the glove box just in case the phone is not working at that particular moment I get pulled over.

My card is in my wallet, but the sheet that shows the dates of insurance is on my phone (it was in the glove box before it went digital).

In the car. It covers the car, so should be with it. If you drive someone else's car, you are covered under their policy (in most circumstances) and if you are in an accident/are pulled over in that car, that is the insurance that should be shown as primary.

We always get two cards for each car on the policy. One in the car, one in the wallet. In some states, just showing your phone app version of the card will not be acceptable by any police who might pull you over.

Glove box. USAA gives us a card specifying the vehicle covered. So we get 2 cards-one for my car and one for my husband's vehicle. I've don't remember ever getting a card that does not specify the vehicle being covered.

always in the glove box of the car... I thought the insurance always went with the car you were in, not the specific person driving the car.
eta: I don't know if State Farm sends us two copies of each card or not, but if they do I'm pretty sure the second copy is at home in our files, not in anyone's wallet.

I'm also with Travelers and was just on their site this morning (www.mytravelers.com). I see that you can print convenience cards. It states these cards are not proof of insurance, but all my insurance information is on the card. This is the card I would probably carry in my wallet and leave the proof of insurance card in my vehicle. I have never carried a car insurance card in my wallet though.

I have never heard of having to keep it in your wallet. I keep mine in my glovebox. Any licensed driver is allowed to drive my car, under my insurance.

I don't drive anyone else's car, so I don't worry about having proof of insurance in my wallet.

I've always carried my card in my wallet, because it proves that I am insured for any car I drive. the way i understand it - vehicles are insured - not people if you drive a friends car and have an accident - THEIR insurance covers it - you as an "incidental driver' - as long as you are properly licensed just the same as if someone drives YOUR car and has an incident - YOUR insurance covers your vehicle i might be wrong - but i've had this assumption the entire time i've been driving i have a paper card in my car - and i have a downloaded version in my phone (acceptable in missouri) and i have the Geico App

That is how I have always understood it. I got pulled over one time when I was driving my grandpa's car. The officer wanted to see the insurance for the CAR, not for ME.

I used to keep it in my wallet. Mostly because my family had kept them in the glove compartment. But when I got pulled over while driving my mom's vehicle, it wasn't there so I got a warning for driving without insurance (just had to prove it to have it removed from my record, so no big deal)
But I was paranoid after that so I'd keep it in my wallet just in case.
Now that I have my own insurance for just me and my one car, I keep one in my car, one in my wallet.

The above is the way it was explained to us in driver's education and it was stressed that the proof of insurance was to be kept in the car. I had never heard of somebody carrying it with them until the thread here a couple weeks ago. Which also made me think probably 75% of the people close to me (friends/family) don't carry a wallet or purse with them. They generally carry a debit card, license and some cash in their pocket.
