I'm going in for endoscopic sinus surgery on Wednesday. I finally got a doctor to listen when I complained about sinus problems, and it appears I've had inflammation in my sinus on one side for many years. It's so bad, the bone along that sinus cavity is thickened, and there are pockets of calcification in the cavity. I've had this awful stinky smell in my nose for about 6 months now (everything smells like poop, honestly) and horrible headaches for years. I'm hoping the smell clears up, and praying this is the cause of my headaches.
Just wondering if anyone has had this surgery, and can tell me what to expect. Is there something you wish you'd known? I had my knee replaced 5 years ago and wasn't as nervous as I am with this....I don't know why. Everyone I've spoken to so far has told me horror stories, so I'm hoping to hear something positive.
*****Update*****
Thanks to everyone who commented! I had the surgery yesterday, and it was really pretty easy. I was much less nervous going in, due to everyone's comments. Good or not so good, all your advice gave me parameters of what to expect, so I felt much more calm going in.
So far, I can breath a little better, but the biggest change is that for the first time in 9 months, there is NO STENCH! The world smells good again!! Aaahhhhh! Well worth it!
Thanks again!

My husband had this about 5 years ago. Wasn't a really big deal IF you follow their instructions. They were pretty specific about how much you bend over, weight of things you carry, etc or you can start nose bleeds that are hard to stop. DH didn't realize how swollen his face would be and how black and blue. He really looked like hamburger meat afterward. After about 3 days, though, he was good.

This was the absolute worst surgery that I have had, and I have had a lot of open surgeries prior to laproscopic (sp?).
It was day surgery. When I woke up there were 2 tampons stuck up in each nostril. My head hurt from the pressure inside my head. I got home at 7:00pm & had to be back at the hospital at 8:00 the next morning. The doctor changed my nose bandages & inserted more tampons. This was done without pain medication. I saw the doctor 2 days later & was given smaller firm cotton balls as well as the post nasal drip catcher. This was a finer elastic band that came from over my ears & held gauss & needed to be worn for about 2 weeks.
The stench (you think that it is bad now) after the surgery made me vomit, adding to the head pain after surgery.
You wanted the bad, this was how my surgery went. I didn't have bone work done, simply a cleaning & re opening of my sinuses.

I actually remembered the stench, but thought maybe it was just my DH so I didn't mention it! Funny that it is apparently a 'thing' with the surgery. SaveSave

I'm not supposed to be getting packing, or whatever the tampons are called, just the drip catcher. I hope your surgery was a success in the end?

I have had it twice. Worst surgery of my life. I also had the tampons and packing and also had splints that stayed in for six weeks. Worst six weeks of my life! Worth it? YES. If I had to do it all over again I would totally do it. I did have to sleep sitting up for quite a while and needed a LOT of lip balm. My lips got very cracked during this recovery and I don't normally have super dry skin. I got that Aquaphor stuff and it worked better than anything else I tried. Get a few packs of frozen peas or corn for him for after. An ice pack is too heavy for the face and may cause more pain than just a bag of peas. Plus, those little suckers and really mold around the bridge of the nose. Worked great for me!
Good luck to BOTH of you!

BEST surgery ever!
Yup.
I said that. I've had many surgeries. This was the best. I had no idea how pain and pressure I was in on a daily basis until I had my sinuses cleaned out. I had several sinuses cleaned, maxillary and sphenoid. Complete white out on CT meaning there was no air passage whatsoever. I also had a septoplasty (moved the nasal septum). Despite the packing, I woke up in the recovery room with LESS pain than I had going in. Even the post op pain was better than what I had before the surgery.. and I truly did not realize the amount of pain I was really in constantly until it was gone. Best thing ever.
My ENT removed the packing before I went home that afternoon. I understand others go home with packing but he does not do that routinely. I think the packing makes a huge difference in recovery- much easier to recover without it.
This was 16 years ago. In the last 16 years, I may have had 2, possibly 3 sinus infections. I obviously had chronic sinusitis (as does the OP) and would have superimposed acute sinusitis very frequently, as in a few times each year. 3 infections in a year would have been a good year and now I've had maybe 3 in 16 years. I do follow the ENT's instructions and use Flonase year round and nasal saline as needed. I stay on top of my allergies as best as I can as well (daily Singulair, with additional meds as needed). I don't ever want to go back to that point.

My husband did. They told us his eyes would be black and he'd be bruised and swollen. He had almost no swelling and NO bruising. Eyes were fine. It was a little bit of a rough recovery with the packing and then the saline wash you have to do. Be sure to follow instructions EXACTLY. And he said when they removed the splints, that was the worst part. (You may or may not have splints. They look like collar stays jammed up your nose.)
He's happy he did it.

Someone in my office had it a few years ago. They had her using a sinusrinse bottle to clean it out after, and when she wasn't doing it religiously they could tell. Once she started following the instructions, she got a lot better a lot quicker.

I had it done with some bone removal. Recovery was surprisingly simple for me. No packing, no drip catcher or anything. I was pretty out of it for a couple of days but after that, not in much pain and could function pretty normally other than the not bending over part of things. It did help me for a while, but I think I may need to get re-checked. The worst part for me was the checkups after, where they'd stick the thing waaayyyy up your nose and it was just in the office. Barf.

My brother had it last week. He posted a hilarious picture of himself with the thing for "catching the drippings" as he said. Nothing stuffed inside. He said it wasn't bad except that whenever he rinsed his sink looked like the floor of a slaughterhouse.

I've had many surgeries from a bowel resection to double mastectomies to having my achilles replaced and being in a wheelchair for six weeks. Oh, and a spinal fusion plus more. To be honest, sorry to say that the sinus surgery was the worst. Having that cr*p up your nose just makes life miserable! Totally miserable! Sorry to have to say it.

I agree with Melissa -- I've had 2 sinus surgeries, one was with the septoplasty. Neither was all that bad. The first one, I did have packing, the second time there was not packing even though it was a far more extensive surgery. In both cases, I was very careful to follow directions for post-op carefully and I've had good results. My best piece of advice would be to use the pain meds as directed, and stay ahead of the pain -- I tend to be overly stoic, and I learned it was better to take the meds pro-actively than to wait until I thought the pain warrented meds. Another thing I remember was that I was very fatigued for several weeks following the surgyer, which surprised me since it didn't seem like that big a deal.

Oh boy. So it will be really bad or not so bad. LOL. I'm feeling better just knowing more of what to expect.
I do have a question: I have a tiny dog, I guess I can't bend down to put the leash on her to walk her. How long is the no bending rule, and how long before I'll feel up to walking her? We don't have a fenced yard, so I must take her out on a leash. My DH can do most of it, but maybe I should hire a dog walker for when he's at work?

My DD did when she was 14, and she was wearing a thing over her face and bleeding on the way home but saying "wow, I can breathe so much better!" so the benefits were immediate for her! It reduced her sinus infections from one never ending I fection for years to 2 in the last 5 years, both easily cleared up. The ent said some people have to have it done again, but she wouldn't mind at all for the level of relief it brought her.

Headaches, stuffiness, sinus pressure-totally gone! Plus technology has changed so much, recovery was much easier. I am about 18 months out from the last sinus surgery and still feel great. I never realized just how lousy I felt prior to surgery. I have suffered from allergies since I was a kid and really work hard to be 1 step ahead, even giving myself weekly allergy injections, daily saline sprays, etc. Good luck, you will do great! I've had it twice - first time about 2002, then again in 2015. the first one was horrible - I had deviated septum and sinus surgery - I had the packing and it drove me absolutely crazy. I think it stayed in 7 days and then I went to the doctor to have it removed. I don't think I could have stood 30 more minutes of having the packing in. Horrible experience.
Second time, in 2014, I had a cyst that was blocking one of my sinuses completely. I did not go home with packing and I followed directions they gave me religiously. Without the packing was a TOTALLY different experience. I had several days of resting, then very light activity for several more days. I just watched TV and read when I felt like it. I had nine sinus infections within eight months before this surgery. I didn't have another infection for almost two years - have had four since Easter this year and am getting ready to go back to the ENT. I feel like I have a cyst on the other side, but won't know until I have a CAT scan. I'm also on weekly allergy shots, daily antihistamine, Singular, sinus saline rinses, a steroid spray, an antihistamine spray and steroid inhaler. I'm ready to get well again!
Hope you don't get packing - just follow directions, and you will be glad you did the surgery.

Had it twice, no big deal both times. They didn't use packing-- instead used clear plastic pieces like stiff piecs of... Saran wrap. But I blew them out a few hours after surgery. I wasn't supposed to blow. I forgot.

I had it in 2002 and 2010. First time had packing, didn't love it. Worst part for me were the headaches I got after, those sucked. However, that surgery was life changing for me. Went from constant infections, round after round of meds, feeling like hell to very infrequent issues. In 2010 I didn't have packing, no headaches, was a breeze really. It wasn't as big of a surgery, but still improved some issues that had returned. I think there have been A LOT of advances in the surgery over the years, you'll do great!

I did it about 7 years ago. Minimal pain and pretty easy recovery. I was amazed at how much better I felt afterward! I haven't had any issues since either. Follow post-op instructions and you'll be just fine.

The first time Dh had the surgery a few years ago he had the same experience. But, things have now changed. He had the surgery again this April and they no longer pack your nose. Recovery was fast. I think one of the hardest things for him was not being able to blow his nose for several days.

Can anyone tell me if this could be something to look into for my daughter? She is always stuffed up, but rarely has drainage. Has a hard time breathing through her nose most of the time. Not much in the way of traditional allergy issues, and doesn't have trouble with infections. It's just the stuffiness and difficulty breathing thru the nose - plus a little trouble with enunciation over the years. I've never had her to an ENT. It's always seemed more like a minor annoyance than something to pursue.

About 13 years ago I had orthognathic jaw surgery-- they cut through my upper jaw right in front of the joint and moved it 5 mm forward-- and since my entire 'face' was open while they operated (they kind of turned my face inside out over my nose to expose my jaw, I think??) the oral surgeon cleaned out my sinuses during the surgery. I apparently had at least one large polyp in my sinuses that he removed, as well. The jaw surgery recovery sucked donkey balls, but that was the first time in AGES that I could breathe through my nose!! Maybe those polyps or whatever they were came back again... Good luck to you, PenandInk; I hope the surgery fixes your problems and that your procedure and recovery are smooth and non-eventful!

To help reduce bruising & swelling eat fresh pineapple &/or drink fresh pineapple juice 2 weeks pre & post-op, plus use Arnica cream.
