I have one outside my kitchen window with two feeders and another near my front porch with a tray feeder, a hummingbird feeder and a goldfinch feeder. I have been spending many hours on my front porch reading and watching the birds.
They all have their own little personalities and there is a definite pecking order to who gets to feed from each feeder. The nuthatches are chattery and the sparrows run in a gang like a pack of teenagers. The cardinals lord it over the others, the goldfinches are extremely picky, and the chickadees sing after every bite.
The hummingbirds zoom in and everyone else scatters. The bluejays squawk from the tree to tell everyone else to get out and the tufted titmouse is the class clown. The red breasted grosbeak is the king of my backyard jungle. The only birds to go near him are the red headed finches. At the end of the day a pair of doves comes by to clean up the mess left on the ground under the feeders.
All in all, it is not the worst way to while away a summer afternoon.

I am keeping up with the hummingbirds but alas, the other feeders are empty. I feel like I am leading them to their death. I wish there were laws against outdoor cats. Because I don't have a dog I am on the neighborhood cat expressway.

Oh awesome!! I LOVE my feeders and bird bath and watching them. I have to admit though - the darned squirrels and chipmunks are a PITA!! They eat ALL day long despite having the feeders that are supposed to be made so that they can't get on them. BS!! LOL

Reading your post makes me want to go get feed and put my bird feeders back out.

I have hummingbirds feeding outside my kitchen window. Two years ago they built a nest in the windchime that hangs next to the feeder. They raised two clutches of two babies each. I loved watching them. The nest is still there but this year it is unoccupied. I used to hand raise cockatiels and had a big outdoor aviary. I miss hand feeding the babies but it is a lot of work.

We recently bought a hummingbird feeder and hung it up on our back deck. We can see it out our sliding glass door. We love watching them zoom in while we are at the dining table.
I wish we would have bought one a long time ago. Our neighbors have a couple of them and we'd always see them over there.

Me too!!! I was so surprised to see how different the visitors became or grew in variety when I put out different feed. Instead of just cardinals, sparrows, chickadees and mockingbirds, I'm getting a ton of red house finches, my nuthatches have returned and the bluejays come in 3 at a time. I never realized how big blue jays are!

I would love to have feeders and have had them at other houses, but here, between the deer, chipmunks and squirrels, I wouldn't be able to keep them full, plus, I have 3 cats and I don't want to be luring birds to their unwitting deaths!

Judy26 your description is beautiful! I'm glad you are enjoying nature so much. I have 2 feeders that I can see from my morning coffee spot on the sofa. I love to watch the birds, too. The squirrels frequently empty my feeders even though they are "squirrel proof". But they are entertaining, too.

I was so excited to have my bird feeder filled all summer. We've been getting all sparrows and now I see there are a bunch of them flying into a hole in the siding of the house on the roof. Now I'm so disappointed that I can't have anymore feed out. I have to wait until fall and then try to patch the hole up so they don't fly into my attic.

I have 2 hummingbird feeders and really enjoy watching them. I thought you weren't suppose to feed other birds in the summer months. Hummm...maybe I'll put out some regular bird feed, too.

My parents have enjoyed watching birds at their bird feeder the past few years so this year I decided to put one out. I have been enjoying it so much. It's next to my driveway and when I pull my car into the driveway I just sit in my car for a while and wait for the birds to show up. Since it's been really hot the past week or so I haven't seen as many but I've been getting goldfinches, chickadees, cardinals and doves with black sunflower seeds. Every now and then I'll get a visitor that I don't recognize. Can anybody tell me what kind of bird this one is? The day I took these photos is the only time I've ever seen him around and I haven't been able to find out what kind it is.

Thank you for sharing. I could have written this post myself, but with our birds.
I don't know why this year has been so much more rewarding than usual, but it absolutely has. Our usual fat and seed feeders have attracted all the tits, nuthatches, chaffinches and bullfinches, and 2 types of woodpeckers. Plus DH bought a niger (nyjer, nyger, otherwise thistle) seed feeder and for the first time we've had siskins and 2 goldfinch families and their babies. We've been putting out mealworms as well, which have attracted the robin redbreasts. And of course the big boys like gulls, magpies, crows, jays and wood pigeons have tried to get in on the act. So have the squirrels. And our dunnocks and blackbirds have been hoovering up whatever gets dropped.
Add in the foxes, badgers, Mr and Mrs Deer and their Bambi, this year's AWWW prize-winner, and it has been, and still is, quite delightful.
Your hummingbirds make me so very envious!

I take my seed feeders down in the summer so Dh doesn't have to mow around the shepherd's crook type hanger, but I do have lots of hummingbirds at my porch feeders. Blue Jays and Cardinals are regular diners at the GSD's dog dish if she doesn't finish it up quickly. Love to watch the birds.
I think the pretty gray bird in the pic might be a Gray Catbird.
