Strangely enough we received a bird feeder as a wedding gift too. It was beautiful----made of teak, very sturdy. That thing lasted 20 years in the sun until it finally fell apart at the seams. That's the second to the oldest wedding gift that lasted. Well, who knew it was a "trend" 20 years ago?!

DH's step-sister filled a clear glass Christmas ornament with momentoes from our wedding. Mini copies of the wedding and shower invitations, and little things that she must have put in the night of the wedding like petals from the flower arrangements and the ribbon and a piece of the tulle from our favors. It was one of the most thoughtful and creative gifts I've ever received. I love gifts like that! Carefully thought out and handmade.

One we really loved and still use--a toolbox with picture framing stuff, household tools, and one of those rechargeable Black and Decker multi power tools--the power drill/small saw/power screwdriver. We used it all the time. Dh's boss/mentor gave us that as his personal gift to us (he and his wife came to our wedding at the beach even though it was a 7 hour drive). The company gave us a gift certificate for the Blue Ridge Room restaurant at the Grove Park Inn. Dh took me there the day we got engaged, and we decided to honeymoon in Asheville to save money. Dh started working at that company in college and was hired full time when he graduated. Dh's degree is in accounting, and his boss was a retired partner at Ernst and Young--he helped dh see that he should go into IT and not accounting. The best present we got was a gorgeous cross stitch sampler of 2 Corinthians 13 that dh's sister made us. It hangs in the hall on the opposite wall from our bedroom door--a great daily reminder of what true love really does. Here's the version we chose Love Never Fails My inlaws suggested the "what God has joined let no man tear asunder" and got kinda pissed that we didn't want it. I thought it was kinda negative. She actually felt bad that "she couldn't afford a 'real' gift". But I displayed it at our rehearsal dinner and the reception and have told her several times how much I love it. I love the toolbox idea with all of the picture hanging framing stuff and household tools!

Our volleyball team goes together for bridal showers and gives a card table and chairs to all of our daughters and future dils. The gift has gotten some weird looks, but a year or so later, the brides always comment that they never knew they needed one, but they do use them. Almost all of the kids are married, suppose some day will be giving grands this gift, lol. Haha, we received this too. The folding wood version and still have the chairs in garage, just in case! And a bird feeder and wind chimes- while in an apartment. Another birdfeeder!

We got half of a cow for our wedding. A freezer full of meat. It was brilliant. (We live in Iowa)

My cousin gave us an umbrella stand - rather nice ceramic/painted with flowers umbrella stand. Came in handy, but alas, I left it when I moved out.

We got an electric toothbrush (2 brushes fortunately) & a stuffed football from one of our groomsmen. He said the football was for if we got bored on our honeymoon.

Weirdest gift we got: a tarnished brass candleholder with a broken, faded U shaped candle that definitely came from a thrift shop! No card or tag, but we're pretty sure we knew which jokesters gave it to us. I can't even find a photo of something similar to link to show its fabulousness. It came packaged with a very old, threadbare house dress that looked like it belonged to someone's 1000 year old granny! We gave the candleholder back to Goodwill after the wedding and trashed the house dress.
Weirdest gift we give: we typically give a case of (good) toilet paper for weddings! It's fun because it's usually (physically) the biggest present they get so everyone always wonders what it is, it's something we know everyone will actually use and it's something that no one wants to spend their own money on. We ALWAYS get a thank you note for it and everyone seems to be amused by it.

8-1/2 years ago when we got married, WE got a bird feeder too! And bird seed. It is a very nice metal and glass one and is hanging on our front porch. And yes, we consider it a good gift.
We also got $75 worth of gift cards to a local chain of restaurants, one is a steak house, one an Italian place and the other is brick oven pizza, burgers and just about anything. We loved it, we got married New Year's Eve and in the winter, the job DH had at the time, he wasn't bringing in much money. Someone later made the comment that it was a weird gift. We said why, it was great for us, we stretched those gift cards to pay most of 4 dinners out. We thought it was so thoughtful of them to make sure we had some date nights.

My MIL gave me a Gameboy for my bridal shower gift It was one of those things that when I opened it I said "Oh, a Gameboy". Enter Jerry Seinfeld when he says in his stand up that a person cannot possibly like the gift if they say the name of the gift upon opening.

Wow, I had no idea they were so popular!

I've got one more! The year I turned 36, DH gave me an infant car seat for my birthday. No, I wasn't expecting or even planning to be at that time. I was more than a little annoyed! Not one of his better ideas.

Not one of his better ideas. Was he trying to send a subtle hint? If so, not so subtle! LOL, there was nothing subtle about it! He had been carping on me for six years already to have a kid. It took me another 5-6 years to get on board with the idea (and for us to get enough out of debt to even think about it). He thought it was hilarious. Me, not so much!

Did your MIL think you were going to be bored once you married your DH and needed a hobby? Odd! Idk. She's a nice woman. Would give you the shirt off of your back but when it comes to gifts, she is horrible. She's very cheap. My dh & I got a box of toothbrushes, mouthwash and dental floss as a Christmas gift once too. Yikes! My kids used to get beach towels for Christmas every year until he told his mom enough. We have plenty. She only bought them because they were $2 at the end of summer. She has actually wrapped casino promotional giveaways and given those as gifts . Save
