What is the most interesting or unique wedding or birthday gift you have ever received? (like it or not like it)
We received a bird feeder (a high end one) and a bag of bird seed as a wedding present. A note inside said something like, "a new hobby for the both of you as you begin your new life". We lived in a condo - really had no place to hang it so it sat in storage for 5 years!
The second unique gift we received (but by far the most used and appreciated but didn't realize at the time) was a safe! Yes, a safe! You know, you don't think about it, but for all the important papers you need to keep. It was given to us by my parents good friends - the husband was a FBI agent at the time.
What about you?

I received a metal dustpan, painted country blue with white flowers and with a music box inside that plays whistle while you work. We've been married 14 years and that and the wine glasses my Grandma gave me are the only wedding gifts that I know we still have. (The dustpan hangs in my laundry room as a decoration.) The best part is that it was in a bag with no gift tag or card...so we aren't 100% sure who it's from. ETA - It's like this one only blue and white.

And no one to thank? So sad. Well, at least you know how much you could get if you ever decide to sell it!

That picture of the dustpan takes me back! When I was a kid we had one basically like that, only it didn't have a music box. I haven't seen one like that in years. They all seem to be the plastic kind that snap onto the broom handle now.

My sister got a frying chicken (not even cut up) for her HS graduation gift.

I was the giver of an odd gift, I know.
Niece had been on her own for about 10 years, and I figured she had the basics. So, I purchased Christmas lights, decorations and tree skirt to make their first Christmas special. She told me she liked the gift and still uses at least some of them.

I never thought of giving a safe for a wedding gift. That's a great idea! And now I want a musical dustpan!

Worst part, my mother fried it for the family dinner that night and my sister had to leave early to rehearse for graduation and didn't get any chicken. LOL Why my mother didn't save it at least one day, I don't know. The chicken was from a goofy neighbor who lived on the farm next door.

We gave a gift certificate to Winco And The day they used it, the freezers broke down and all the freezer food was 50 cents to a $1. At the time I was totally pissed off because they never called us to tell us of the great deal. I guess it still irks me.

DH's aunt gave us a decorative rooster a few years ago (about 2 feet high). It was an odd gift, but I went ahead and put it in my kitchen. A couple of years later, she comes to visit, and says where did the rest of your roosters go? I never had any. She had confused me with someone else.

Our volleyball team goes together for bridal showers and gives a card table and chairs to all of our daughters and future dils. The gift has gotten some weird looks, but a year or so later, the brides always comment that they never knew they needed one, but they do use them. Almost all of the kids are married, suppose some day will be giving grands this gift, lol.

Great gifts, but odd.

we received momgrammed towels - with someone else's monogram. (I think they were purchased from a "not quite perfect" store.)
Dh and I had a lot of basic house stuff when we got married, so one of my bridal showers was camping themed. We were married in 1998 and still have and use a lot of the camping related gifts we received.

As long as they thanked you for the gift, why were you pissed they didn't tell you about the deal they got? I would have been happy my friends got an even better gift.

It's not that unique but something I particularly appreciated was the flower pot. The day after our wedding, I looked out on the porch and there was a very large flower pot filled with beautiful potted plants and a card. It was from one of my cousins. They dropped it off on their way to my wedding. I reuse the pot every year.

Strangely enough we received a bird feeder as a wedding gift too. It was beautiful----made of teak, very sturdy. That thing lasted 20 years in the sun until it finally fell apart at the seams. That's the second to the oldest wedding gift that lasted.

DH's step-sister filled a clear glass Christmas ornament with momentoes from our wedding. Mini copies of the wedding and shower invitations, and little things that she must have put in the night of the wedding like petals from the flower arrangements and the ribbon and a piece of the tulle from our favors. It was one of the most thoughtful and creative gifts I've ever received.

One we really loved and still use--a toolbox with picture framing stuff, household tools, and one of those rechargeable Black and Decker multi power tools--the power drill/small saw/power screwdriver. We used it all the time. Dh's boss/mentor gave us that as his personal gift to us (he and his wife came to our wedding at the beach even though it was a 7 hour drive). The company gave us a gift certificate for the Blue Ridge Room restaurant at the Grove Park Inn. Dh took me there the day we got engaged, and we decided to honeymoon in Asheville to save money. Dh started working at that company in college and was hired full time when he graduated. Dh's degree is in accounting, and his boss was a retired partner at Ernst and Young--he helped dh see that he should go into IT and not accounting. The best present we got was a gorgeous cross stitch sampler of 2 Corinthians 13 that dh's sister made us. It hangs in the hall on the opposite wall from our bedroom door--a great daily reminder of what true love really does. Here's the version we chose Love Never Fails My inlaws suggested the "what God has joined let no man tear asunder" and got kinda pissed that we didn't want it. I thought it was kinda negative. She actually felt bad that "she couldn't afford a 'real' gift". But I displayed it at our rehearsal dinner and the reception and have told her several times how much I love it.

My sister bought us the binoculars we registered for. We don't use them a lot but when we do we're very happy that we have them.

We received a food warming tray without the plug. It was clearly second hand and I didn't want to embarrass them by asking for the plug.

And a bird feeder and wind chimes- while in an apartment.

We got a large hammock from my sister who knew we had no place to put it and no time to use it. we lived in a tiny upstairs apartment, had no yard or trees to hang it, and I was traveling a lot and working 16 hour days. I was rarely home. We continued to live in tiny apartments for years. She said it was her way to encourage me to relax. It never left the box, and after dragging it from one address to the next for 15 years, we finally gave it away. Even now we do have a yard, lying in a hammock is not how I'd choose to relax.
My Teen DS keeps getting Christmas nutcrackers from his grandmother. No idea why. He doesn't like them. He doesn't want them. It has become a big joke. She has told me I can't get rid of them because they are not mine and DS will want them when he has his own house. Every year he gets more. They take up 2 big totes - at last count there were 19....it's ridiculous enough that he brought them this week to show and tell at the camp he works at, figuring no one would believe a 15 yr old had so many nutcrackers.
I think nothing tops the chicken grad gift!!

Probably the oddest gift was the hand painted salt & pepper shakers with matching old horseshoe. The shakers were those metal ones with the handle and were painted blue with a little country couple. The horse shoe was meant to hold paper napkins and was painted the same. This was in 1977 so about the time the country farmhouse look was really popular. I still have them stuck in the top of a cabinet somewhere, but they really need to go into the donation pile. No idea why I've kept them for 39 years and 18 moves! ETA: While it was on my mind, I got it out of the cabinet and it is already in the donation bag! Here in all it's weirdness! The horseshoe has the little guy on the other side, while the shaker on the left has the woman painted on it. One we really loved and still use--a toolbox with picture framing stuff, household tools, and one of those rechargeable Black and Decker multi power tools--the power drill/small saw/power screwdriver. This is actually a really good gift! Save
