As summer is quickly ending, I wanted to post some words I heard today that meant a lot to me (NOT a teacher) that may mean very much to you all.
I got a phone call yesterday from a woman telling me that she was faxing something in, and who would be expecting it.
I took her fax to one of the attorneys this morning...one of the "Managing Partners".
He told me that he was doing some work for her at no charge. He then told me that she was his High School theatre teacher. He and I both share a great deal of fondness and respect for the arts in schools as he was heavily involved in high school and 2 of my 3 children were/are heavily involved. He then said "the investment she made in me...which not only impacted my life, but my career as well...doing this for her for no charge is the very least I can do for her".
We've had some great teachers. Had a few that I wasn't real fond of but with 3 children and all those years of teachers, you can't always hit the jackpot. I've been very vocal about supporting teachers and telling them often how much they mean to me, to my kids, my family, and the impact they've made on our lives.
To hear the attorney say those words this morning, basically sharing the same sentiment I've often shared, meant a great deal to me.
To our pea teachers...thank you. The work you do is impossible. NOt many are able to do it well. (I KNOW I could never EVER be a teacher) Thank you for doing what you do, and thank you for making a difference in the lives of our children.

On Monday, I was sitting in my cubicle and I heard two men from a different department talking about teachers. I retired from teaching last May and have a great part time job that is low stress and good pay and I consider myself very lucky. One man talked about his favorite teacher and how she made him work and he learned so much from her He said she pushed him and then got specific on how she called him out on his lack of effort. The other man then started reminiscing about his favorite fifth grade teacher who was the toughest in the school, but he learned so much. By the end of their conversation I wanted to stand up on my desk and start shouting. I was that teacher with the really high expectations who often had parent after parent at my door with every excuse why their kiddo didn't need to be accountable. Thankfully most of my kids knew that I loved them even though they just didn't want to work.

That's lovely. I know what an impact my teachers had on me; I can only hope that I have half the impact on my students.

I run into old students all of the time and they always have the best memories of something we did. My first grade class from 29 years ago are all around 35 years old and have kids of their own. So many of them are FB friends and so many have gone into teaching giving me credit. Love that.

I love that! My 4th/5th grade teacher was very special to me - I'm sure she's gone now. I also had a HS English teacher who made me feel valued. I often wonder where she is. Google has been no help. I also had a religion teacher who affected me profoundly. Google WAS helpful with her - I really do need to write to her!
It means the world to me when I hear updates on my former students!

Thank you for this story. I always hope to make that kind of impact.
Next year will be the last year of teaching for my fourth grade teacher. He definitely had an impact on my decision to become an educator. He mentored me through high school and during my student teaching as well. For 15 years now I have had the chance to teach in the same school. What an awesome role model.

I learnt the most with hard teachers. Kids need to learn that they really can reach high expectations and should do it for themselves.
At the time I could get frustrated, but I'm so glad that I had the chance to go back and thank them.

What a sweet story. Teachers need to hear from people who appreciate all their time and energy even years later.
My son came home one day and said I had saved him a very expensive ticket. He was picked up by a policeman who recognized his last name and asked if he was related to me. When he found out DS was my son, he told him that I was his 3rd grade teacher and he loved me. He told DS to thank me for saving him from a hefty fine....and to slow down!
