I vote for an exersaucer or a superyard. We loved our superyard. We had one and my parents had one. Great for indoors or out. We loved our Superyard too. I got the one that has different colored panels. I got two sets for our family room at the time.

Not a grandma, but the things our DD (now 6) used the longest were the Pack n Play, a travel booster seat*, a Fisher Price Rock n Play Sleeper and the infant to toddler rocker (she still sits in the one we left at the cabin sometimes). The Rock n Play Sleeper was a godsend, and one of the best things we spent money on because our DD used it every day for over a year. She napped in it, slept in it at times if she was congested or had reflux, played in it and it folded up to be somewhat portable. We kept our big Pack n Play to have around the house in case we have guests with young children who might need a safe place to nap. Same with the infant to toddler rockers, we have one at the lake and one at home. * I starred the travel booster because MIL wanted to get DD a high chair when she turned one to have at the lake cabin. I lobbied hard for one of these Fisher Price Folding Booster Seat instead because we didn't have one and would have been able to use it EVERYWHERE instead of just at the cabin. It straps to any standard chair with a back and folds up small for storage. Needless to say, she bought us a big expensive clunky high chair that DD used on weekends for maybe three months. She had completely outgrown it by the following year. It doesn't fold up well for storage, so we will probably sell it since it isn't a convenient thing to keep around for occasional use by a guest. We ended up buying the folding one ourselves and kept it under the back seat of our truck so we'd always have it with us. That seat came in SO handy so often! We used it at family/friend's houses when we'd get invited for dinner or a party, at restaurants that didn't have boosters or baby chairs and as an extra seat for other kids when DD's younger cousin came over. She used it until she was almost four, so the $25-30 it cost was money well spent. Since it's small, it's easy to stow away and pull out if someone with a little kid comes to visit. (Which reminds me, my friend borrowed it for her grandson and never gave it back!)

Watch garage sales for a Little Tykes kitchen for when baby becomes a toddler. My grandchildren are 12 and 8 and still like to play with it. Now they play restaurant with us. It's a riot. They love being "bad" waiters. The first thing they used to ask for was grandpa to bring the kitchen up from the basement.

Not a Nana but I have a little one.
Watch prices there, even with a coupon they are often still more expensive than Amazon.
Ask before you buy a bumbo. They are short lived and I personally found them unsafe and wouldn't use them for my skinny legged child who could hoist/squirm legs out very quickly after having the head control to use it.
A travel high chair would be great, or older yet a potty seat for your toilet. I also liked having a few child friendly cups/plates since Nana only had glass.

I would get something that will last a little longer than a Bumbo will, for usefulness sake. A space saver high chair like this that converts to a booster will last several years! We loved ours. My 4 yr old still fits in the booster, although he hasn't wanted to use it for a while. t.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=29561256Not a nana, but this is what I asked my mom to buy for her house too. It has come in handy for all the grand kids! This is what I ended up getting with my coupon. I don't want to get a lot of stuff that won't get used. You guys gave me some great suggestions for future things to get. I already have the changing foam and cover, plus wipes and diapers. I can't buy her any cloths for baby as a friend very generously gave her hand me down cloths for the next year! I am thinking I might get one of the saucer things next, but there is no rush for that. Thanks again for for all the suggestions, this has been fun!

It takes up much less room than a high chair and they can use it so much longer.

I'd do the high chair - the saucer isn't really good for kids and can outgrow that pretty quick.

Congratulations on becoming a Nana! I'm Nana to 4, ages 13, 5 and 2-year old twins. In addition to the good items listed above, the one thing I forgot to get was sippy cups! They come in fun shapes and sizes, and after 20 years of not having little ones around... You forget how hard it is for little ones to drink from a cup without a lid!

If you go for the chair, look into getting the seat that changes to a rocker for toddlers. It will last a lot longer then other seats. I got a space saver high chair from a garage sale for $10, so maybe go that route if you want that also.

A pack n play. My grandsons slept in it at my house from birth-2 1/2. Hands down the single most useful item I purchased.

Congratulations!!! I just saw this thread and your happy news. I am guessing you posted when the baby was born, but I was in Canada and Poland then. How wonderful to be young and able to enjoy a grandbaby!! Boy? Girl? Have fun!!!

It's a boy, Owen James. I didn't post when he was born. I will check with my DD about posting a picture. She is being cautious about posting pics on the Internet. She asked me to check with her before posting any, so I'm sticking with her request. Thanks for asking!

Congrats on becoming a Nana!!
I second the high chair idea - my parents had one and it was great not to have to lug extra stuff around when going there.
A word of caution about the bumbo seats. My friend is a chiropractor and posted this on her business page:
