My DD had a baby in May...yeah!!! So I am a first time Nana! I have a coupon for BabiesRUs that expires today for 15% of one item. I'd like to get something that I would be able to use at my house for the baby (not necessarily for now, but for later). What would you suggest? They have everything they need, so I'm going to spend this one on something for my house. What was the thing that got/gets used most when baby/child visits you? They live fairly close so I will see the baby quite often.

My youngest Dgs is just 6 mo and I've decided I need an exersaucer or something similar for our house. He's decided he really doesn't want to be held all the time and he's ready to *do* something. It probably won't get a ton of use but I'm fine with that as I'll put it in a consignment sale or donate it when we're done with it.

a pack n play so the baby has a safe place to nap while at your house or a high chair. But I'd start with a pack n play

I agree with kerri w... an excersaucer or bumbo chair that has a table attachment.. I put my granddaughters in it all the time... that way I don't have to hold them all the time... they have all liked it

Not a Nana, but things that my parents used were a high chair and a pack n play.
The other thing was a car seat if you are going to keep your grandchild overnight or help shuttle them around. But that is probably more down the road.

But that is probably more down the road. I already have the car seat thing....things are so different from when I had my kids. You just snap that carrier in and away you go. I think I will get either a high chair or seat. She has a pack n play that they don't use, so potentially it could come to my house. Save

Is there a different one that attaches to the table? This sounds like something that would be good for my house. I will get it elsewhere if that is the case and get something else today. Save

I think anaterra was referring to the which has a table attachment. Or you can buy a table attachment for the Bumbo separately. It fits on the Bumbo like a tray on a highchair.

I would get something that will last a little longer than a Bumbo will, for usefulness sake. A space saver high chair like this that converts to a booster will last several years! We loved ours. My 4 yr old still fits in the booster, although he hasn't wanted to use it for a while. t.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=29561256Not a nana, but this is what I asked my mom to buy for her house too. It has come in handy for all the grand kids!

But that is probably more down the road. and if you have a bunch more, you will need a van to have room for all those car seats. I found a beautiful antique high chair in a neighbor's garbage! All 12 of my gc used it and now dd is using it for a photography prop.

It was also easy to take with us or store when not in use. Bumbos are easy to find second hand inexpensively.

Another vote for pack and play. We use the heck out of ours! My parents and sister have them too. Kiddos can nap or be contained anywhere! We take ours when traveling too. Since they already have a pnp. I'd say to get a high chair. I have a graco one that comes off the high chair base and can be attached to a chair. We used that until my DD was 3 years old! It's a good investment. Mine is like this: t.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=87953436

Congrats on the new baby! I was going to say a porta crib ... is that the same thing as the pack 'n play? I think maybe. That was imperative for my DGS and it's still in the corner of his room at my house, but now it holds toys. I keep it just in case I should need it again in the future.

Water toys for your bath tub. My grandchildren loved having different bath toys. wooden puzzles were also much used. And magnetic marbles. Oh my! They loved those marbles and played with them for years. Of course, these are not ideas for infants, but toys and books were always much used at my house.

Agree to high chair. Get one that folds for storage. We had a std high chair for first 3 grandchildren and upgraded to a folding one. So much easier to store when they outgrow and you are waiting on next grandchild.

High chair and dishes for the kids. The pack n play duplicates at my parents was odd because we had one and it's called a pck n play...so...?

I vote for the exersaucer, my grandson loved it and it was nice for him to have a place to sit while awake. He used until he was over a year old!

Magnetic marbles only good for ages 4 and up and for children that most likely will not put things in their mouths. Brush up on CPR and first aid , especially what to do when a baby is choking - the gift of life!

On a much smaller scale, I would suggest a wipe warmer.

I vote for an exersaucer or a superyard. We loved our superyard. We had one and my parents had one. Great for indoors or out.

It has come in handy for all the grand kids! Not a grandma but I agree with this. I think we used a Bumbo for maybe a couple of months total for both my kids? Once they start sitting up on their own, they wouldn't sit in the Bumbo. My oldest almost fell off of a counter in one because she wanted to get out (it was stupid of me to have her up there though). If you do want a Bumbo, get one at a consignment sale or store for WAY less than at a store. Mine (with the tray attachment) is already tagged for my local fall consignment sale for $5. They always have tons of them. If you think you will take the baby on walks and you will have the bucket seat, maybe something like a snap n go stroller? But again, depending on the size of the baby it might not be a long term item. Since my baby started sitting up she hates sitting in the infant seat as a stroller. I always appreciate my MIL having her own set of bibs and sippy cups and baby spoons at her house so we don't have to pack them back and forth. I just drop the baby off with her diaper bag and go on my way!

Practical: folding high chair
Safety: if you have an open fireplace that you use, an all around secured fire guard if you have stairs, stairgate socket covers and toddler proof cupboard catches
Fun: small outdoor splash pool or sand table with associated toys

I'm not a Nana, but as a mom of a one year old, I absolutely pick an exersaucer over a high chair. They will eventually get a high chair that fits their needs. I looked at 6 before I chose a high chair.

Congratulations! I'm not a grandma, but when my best friend had twins, I got her 2 convertible infant to toddler rockers like this one. They weren't Nemo, I think they were Fisher Price Safari ones, but same type. The girls are 6 now, and they still sit in them when they watch tv! They were worth every penny, and then some. Most useful baby gift I've ever given.

Congrats on your new role as Nana! I am Nana to 5 who are now 10 through 16 yrs old.
I had a regular size crib and high chair that I bought new and it got lots of use! Now my sister is using it for her grands. Lots of Bath Toys! Something the kids loved was bath time at nana's. Moms don't have as much time as nanas do (usually) to just let them play in the tub.
Enjoy every minute! They grow up way too fast.

I just want to say I hope I look as good as you do when I am a grandmother! Congratulations on your first grandchild! My parents babysat my brothers kids, and they had a bouncer seat, exersauser and high chair at their house. They liked to keep big things there so my brother and sil didn't have to bring them back and forth. And lots of diapers and wipes.
