from competing in Rio. They are looking at banning Russia entirely.
First, why did Russia think they could get away with it and second, I feel bad for anyone on their teams who were not doing it and are caught up in this.

Remember back in the day when all the East German women were built like men? Serious doping going on then.

They thought they could get away with it because they had, for a long time probably.
I agree, it's very harsh on the innocents but a stand has to be taken when its as wholesale as it clearly is within their teams.

I heard they are pushing for an entire ban on all Russian athletes now.

I think the Chinese female swimmers were also being investigated for steroids as well, if I recall reading something about it. I had been reading an article about the different countries and how they support or house the Olympic athletes, and the article mentioned the athletes from China literally taken from their home and training for the Olympics and the medication/steroid that they were given. It's just so incredibly sad how some countries treat their athletes. I thought it was awful how varied the financial support was for US athletes, that they have to basically do a lot of it on their own, but that's really nothing in comparison to the treatment other countries give.
I thought Russia was already out, didn't realize it was still under discussion - thought I heard the news saying it was a done deal that they were all officially banned.

Am I the only one who believes the Olympic Games have outlived their usefulness, so to speak? Rampant corruption from the IOC down regarding how host countries are chosen; host countries spending fortunes on Olympic Villages, only to leave them to rot & ruin after the games are over; doping and other forms of state-sanctioned cheating; professional athletes allowed to compete?
I can't even remember the last time I actually watched an Olympic event live.

I saw a segment on the news recently about how they were able to get around the mandatory drug testing. They built secret holes in the wall and passed thru clean urine for tainted samples. It was like something from a spy thriller. The planning and deceit came from the highest levels. Sadly, I'm sure it happens with other countries too.

I thought Russia was already out, didn't realize it was still under discussion - thought I heard the news saying it was a done deal that they were all officially banned. Track and Field athletes were banned a while back, but it was appealed, and the appeal decision came down yesterday, upholding the ban. Earlier this week, there was another report from WADA, which was into the systemic doping, and it covered more sports. Based on that, the entire team may be banned, but the IOC haven't announced anything yet.

It's such a shame that there is so much corruption in the Olympics. It should be something that brings the world together, but it doesn't.

I saw some of Russian gymnasts ( olga Korbut era- I got her autograph and almost passed out with excitement!) competing in London in the 70's. They had delayed puberty and I'm sure other drugs too. I've often wondered what the long term effects on health have been for those athletes and unfortunately , it does taint their amazing performance and achievements when you find out drugs were used.

I don't know about the Russian gymnasts, but there has been a fair bit in the news here in the past few years about the former East German athletes. Many - more than you would expect - have developed cancers and other illnesses that can be connected with steroid use. Many of the women were also infertile, again, most likely from steroids in their teens.

I can't even remember the last time I actually watched an Olympic event live. An Olympiad happens every two years now with summer and winter games and it's all I can hear and read about. I am not into the Olympics as I don't believe in any of it. The doping or injuries or what have you. I am not into sports at all so that's probably why I don't care for it.

Between all the athletes not attending due to Zika fears and the ones eliminated for doping there's going to be 5 athletes competing in 1 event. Geesh.
I'm glad though that the IOC is taking this seriously. I do feel bad for any team members that aren't doping.

I remember during the Winter Sochi games, how our Canadian athletes were complaining that they were being tested for drug use more than once. They were told it was "random" but the athletes didn't believe that.

I think they really got off track when they split the years of the olympics. When both happened and they only happened every 4 years, it was a bigger deal

Reports coming through that the IOC has decided against a blanket ban on Russia, instead leaving it up to individual sport federations.

So passing the buck then... Basically, yes. Though Athletics banned Russia, so hopefully some other federations follow through.
