I'm curious to know if you have any resources for 'motivational extras' for your teams. I have recently started to manage a new team. I would like to be the kind of leader that is tapped into motivational bits and pieces, career development tips, articles on instilling the right kind of culture in your department, etc. Are there any websites you read, mailing lists you subscribe to, books you can recommend to give me some ideas? Thanks in advance!...

I work for a healthcare system and employee engagement and being a "great place to work" are really important to the organization. They have quarterly leadership trainings and there have been some really good ones. Just today we had a session about candor and it was fantastic. I highly recommend checking out Shari Harley. She wrote a book called "How to Say Anything to Anyone" and her website is candidculture.com. She also has YouTube videos that I'm going to check out. Her presentation was really helpful and she gives instruction on how to have those hard conversations with your staff, provide feedback, etc. We also recently had a session about stay interviews and received the book by Richard Finnegan. I highly recommend this book also. We have started doing these at the organization and it is really helping leadership develop trust with our staff and they know that we're really listening because we follow up regularly with topics discussed. Each month we have a question and our management team in my department reaches out to every associate to discuss and feedback provided to the whole group.

My top three:
If one person is mucking up something, then address the problem with him, not with some general statement directed at the entire staff.
If you've hired right, then you should trust and empower your staff to do their jobs.
Free stuff is nice but too much of it just makes people think "I'd rather have a raise than free tacos and a shitty t-shirt."

I like the book h3 leadership. It's very religion based, but I was able to look past it and apply it to my organization.

Entreleadership (I think that is how it is spelled) is a podcast under the Dave Ramsey brand. Some of them have been interesting to listen to.
