I was stung in the hand by a big, black wasp/hornet on Wednesday evening. I have never exhibited allergic symptoms in the past when I've been stung by bees, wasps, hornets, etc. It will hurt like no tomorrow but no allergic reaction of any kind that I can recall.
Yesterday I woke up with my hand 'normal' but by late afternoon, it was red, hot, and swollen and itching like crazy. I took Benadryl, used cortisone cream and iced it as much as possible. It is still swollen, though the swelling goes down a tad when I keep ice on it. The Benedryl (50mg) didn't have much impact last night. I took a Claritin this morning because I couldn't afford to be drowsy due to work.
I'd like to hear from others who have similar experiences. I have NO issues with breathing or swelling anywhere else. I did read online that sometimes happens and can last 2-3 days and COULD be a sign of a developing allergy.

You're treating it correctly. As long as you don't have any hives or dizziness, throat/tongue itching or swelling, I'd continue just as you are. You may want to visit your doctor or call to see if they might want to prescribe an epi pen "just in case" if you do develop a systemic reaction in the future.
Just had someone come into the office with this very scenario today and that's what we did for her.
If it's still swollen in a day or two, you might consider urgent care just to be sure there is no infection.

Also, I should clarify that the reason we gave her the Rx for an epi pen is because she thought she remembered swelling up badly from a sting as a child. We didn't see anything today that led anyone to believe she'd need one, but in her case, better safe than sorry so it's not unreasonable to check with your doctor.

I don't know if this will help for this bite, but in the future when stung, put Listerine on it immediately. I found this by accident as I used to use Vick's Vapor Rub (my mom did this). Turned out hubby took the Vapor Rub for a horse, so my husband suggested putting Listerine on it. He was grasping at straws since he knew he was in trouble. . I poured Listerine on the bite immediately. Within a minute, it no longer hurt and it never swelled. I couldn't even find where I had been stung. It doesn't matter what flavor as we have green, daughter used purple and another friend had the gold color. Worth a shot now, but can't hurt to try. Also, my daughter used it on poison ivy that my grandson had gotten into, and he never broke out.

My mother just had this happen to her a couple of weeks ago. Her arm became very red, swollen and itchy. She did go to the emergency room and the doctor gave her some kind of medicine. Her stings gave her flu like symptoms. She kept an ice pack on her arm which seemed to help a bit with the pain. Keep an eye on it if things don't look right or you don't feel right go to the doctor. Hope it gets better soon.
