Has anyone else noticed that fruit is expensive at Walmart? I went there after work and the peaches were $1.69 EACH! WTH?? They were $1.79/pound last weekend at the local grocery store. I don't think the Walmart peach weighed a pound! And Walmart prices a lot of their fruit by the piece. I noticed oranges were sold individually too, not by the pound. Maybe it is just my local Walmart??

Someone did something wrong because peaches are ALWAYS by the pound, not each. Citrus fruits are always by the each or by the bag, apples & peaches by the pound or by the bag. At least that is the way mine has been for the last 5 years.
Very frequently someone entering the price (into the system) hits the wrong thing and it comes up at the register at each when it should be pound or vice versa and the price goes sky high. And it takes forever to get them to fix it...

No, my Walmart does that too. It's way too expensive to pay per piece and I think the produce is never very fresh (because it's too expensive LOL). I always have to make a trip to Sprouts for fruits and veggies.

I don't grocery shop at Walmart, but at target peaches are often priced individually.

Most grocery stores sell by the pound unless its Target (which doesn't have scales) or they are bundled together like SAMs. I think you are correct that someone made an error.

The sign for the peaches said "EACH", I didn't even bother to take them up to the register.

The produce at my local Walmart is very expensive and it's pretty poor quality too.

And again in the statement you just made you said "someone who entered it in the system hit the wrong thing." That statement presumes to know how it is done in every grocery store, everywhere.

They are always by the pound at my Walmart. Someone could have put each on the sign by mistake or put the peaches or sign in the wrong place. I have already seen where there is an end cap of Poptarts that had a sign over it that said $19.95. I'm pretty sure that is wrong. Mistakes happen.

I don't work @ my Walmart but am there frequently and it has always been by the pound except as mentioned above (citrus etc). And avocados. They are each and they make me nuts as I love them and the price varies so much, so often. ETA I just bought nectarines there and they (and peaches) were $1.69?/pound. I could smell them because they were at the perfect ripe stage. They called my name and I answered

Walmart's fruits are stupid expensive. I can go to Sprouts and pay a fraction of what Walmart charges.

Speaking of fruit, I bought ONE dragon fruit for just under $4 at my local HEB. It was the size of two peaches though!

I agree that fruits are usually by the pound. Where the heck does Walmart get their fruit? That seems so funny that Walmart carries fruit.

I agree that fruits are usually by the pound. Where the heck does Walmart get their fruit? That seems so funny that Walmart carries fruit. Most WalMarts around here are now "WalMart Supercenters" which has a full size grocery store in edition "regular" WalMart. I actually miss the smaller one that they tore down (and it's been 15-ish years) to replace by the super one. Sometimes, even though it's one stop shopping", it's just too big. You can't run in for one thing and get in and out quick. Takes you a few minutes just to walk to back of store to grab milk or whatever.

? I guess I don't get your question, ~summer~. It's grocery store so probably has many of the same suppliers that other grocery stores have. Just more of them because of size/quantity.

I just wonder where they get their fruit from...seems odd. A peach farm? An apple farm? I could go on.... But seriously, why does it seem odd that Walmart carries fruit? I'm confused now. I'll go drink another cup of coffee and reread.

I don't buy much in the way of fruits or veggies at wal mart. I try because they claim to buy local whenever possible, whatever that means in Chicago? But it does not look appealing and the prices seem high.

If you (general) dislike Wal-Mart, why do you shop there? Simply go to another store for your shopping needs.

I like my Wal-Mart Supercenter and their fruit is usually good. Peaches are always sold by the pound at MY Wal-Mart.

I do most of my grocery shopping there because they are cheaper than my local grocery store. I am just suprised how expensive their fruit is. It just doesn't seem to be in line with the rest of the store. So, I do buy my produce elsewhere, but for staples, they have the best prices in town.

I find WalMart produce prices at MY local WM to be on par with or a bit cheaper in general than the grocery stores. The quality is usually decent - sometimes a particular item isn't looking the best - a couple of weeks ago I didn't buy cucumbers because there were only 4-5 and none looked very good. I asked the produce guy and he apologised - that was all there was left and he agreed, he wasn't impressed either. But that happens everywhere occasionally, I find.
I think our Publix has a very pretty produce section but their prices are higher in general and sometimes they pre-package stuff I prefer to buy by the piece (summer squash for instance - I could buy a package of three or I could buy a package of pre-sliced but I couldn't pick a single summer squash which is all I really needed/wanted).
I can't speak to peaches specifically because I dislike the fuzziness of fresh peaches and only ever eat them tinned. But in my experience they are usually sold by the pound unless they are a speciality one - DH bought a 2-pack of donut peaches recently and that was a per item price

My Walmart neighborhood market sells oranges and peaches per item. Expensive and not even for great condition fruit. I do pay the price, when I'm really desperate and don't have time to go to another supermarket.

I have no clue what's happening at any of the local Walmarts around here, but I do know that other stores in my area sell some fruit individually and some by the pound, BUT, sometimes they switch things up.
The sign references in the OP sounds like it really must be a misprint, though, because my goodness, it's summer. That's typically the time to buy peaches for the lowest prices, and $1.69 each is bloody ridiculous.

I haven't been to Walmart for a few weeks; but, ours has nice produce and I've seen the staff on many occasions looking it over and discarding/replacing items. The prices are the same or, in many cases, better than a regular grocery store around here.
Their dairy products are no bargain here. Their paper goods cost more than our regular grocery stores.

If you (general) dislike Wal-Mart, why do you shop there? Simply go to another store for your shopping needs. I don't know what the OP's options are but this often isn't practical. In my town, there is one other grocery store and they have plenty of drawbacks as well. Neither Walmart or the other store often have what I want. For example, I can't buy fresh seafood anywhere in my town. I have to go to the one grocery store in our entire county that has seafood and it is several miles in the other direction - not near any other services. For produce, I do have a local market in addition to the stores but it is hit and miss as well in terms of quality. For non-grocery items, Walmart is it, like them or not. Want shampoo, to get photos printed, a light bulb for your stove? You go to Walmart or you drive 20 miles to the next town or shop on-line.

I was going to say the small new Walmart has good produce, but then I remembered our Super Center does too.
The small one is across street from a "gourmet" Chain grocery and a stoplight away from another. It's perfectly situated on my route for lights and turns, super easy to run on and grab something fresh. if prices are better across the street, I don't know. It's a huge store, and I dont like how it's organized or the crowds.

I know Walmart has hurt small businesses, but they've done a good job bringing goods to towns that didn't used to have them. I guess I'm old enough to have noticed changes/availability in things like produce or groceries in less populated areas from the 1980s until now.
