This summer I am subbing at a program. I do not work a lot, only a few hours a week if that. So my first check they said my payroll paperwork did not get turned in in time. I get that I started right at the end of a pay cycle. Plus I work in one location and payroll is based out of a different location. So I should have been paid today, but it did not happen. I called Center Manager and she said my paperwork did not get in in time again. Now they had 2 weeks to get this figured out. I ask a couple times last week what I needed to do to be sure I got paid, they said it was good.
I am not scheduled next week, but am the week after for 3 days. I am a little leary continuing to work for them when I have yet to receive a paycheck and we are in the 3 pay cycle. I would not get paid until the end of the week I am scheduled to work. Now, I can also get unemployment in the summer, but I have to declare hours worked. So when I work I do not receive as much unemployment. I end up getting less unemployment, but not the money for working.
I should have known when my interview started 35 minutes late, things would not go well with this company.
My question is, I said I would work in 2 weeks, but until I actually get paid, I don't want to. If this were you, would you work or would you call and say until you get paid you will not be working? They need to get their act together and get things right.
Any ideas and suggestions will be considered.
Thanks

Yeah, I would tell them that until you receive a check you won't be working any additional hours. Then I'd be prepared for them to say, ok, then you are fired. But really, working for free is worse and I would respect my time and own interests before some company who won't even pay me for hours worked.

If I was not working at least a few days every week, it isn't worth their payroll persons time to keep track of you, get your pay in time and you are going to remain unpaid. Ask to be paid for the hours already worked but not work more until paid. REport them to the state labor board for unpaid wages and be done with them.

Were you the one that didn't do payroll on time or was it someone else? If it was someone else, go to payroll and ask to get paid. They don't get to mess up twice. If they still don't want to pay you, ask for the supervisor. Call the labor board.

Just because you are not working your third week doesnt mean they don't have to get their ass in gear for weeks one and two. If that is the line they are feeding you, then yeah, I would let them know you are holding off until pay is received before you report back to work. At the same time, I would not sit back and wait out week three--I would call Monday and make sure your paperwork or whatever is submitted and ensure you can expect a check for their week three cycle. And yes, the DOL is your friend when you do not get paid.

No pay, no work. They need to get their act together.

Take it to the person above the person who is feeding you this line of bullshit. Make copies of all communications where they are telling you this, along with copies of your timesheets. If one email to a higher up does not result in a check that day, file a complaint with the State Dept of Labor. You will get paid then. (I work for a large payroll company, and I can tell you what they are saying is bullshit.)

who is responsible for sending your paperwork to payroll? I would go to their boss and bring it to their attention before filing a wage claim (which can take weeks to solve). But they should be able to issue a manual paycheck within a day or two.
I would also ask Payroll what paperwork is missing just in case it is something they need that you haven't provided (that your boss didn't ask you for). And get it completed directly with Payroll.
There is no reason you shouldn't have gotten paid on the second payroll. That's just someone being lazy or incompetent and their boss needs to know that!

I think I will call her first thing Monday morning and talk to her. I kept asking the week before about doing a timesheet and she said the account had not been set up yet.

Definitely call back on Monday morning if her supervisor knows. If nothing happens, keep going up the chain of command. I will say in our group of companies I try to let all employees, no matter what level, that they have every right to go directly to HR or payroll if they have an issue and it isn't getting solved. Honestly your situation pisses me off for you!

I know we are obligated to report new hires to the state within so many days. And it's not long, maybe 3 or 5. Sounds like they are failing in multiple areas. We hire every day and have new hires entered and ready in payroll within 24 hours of hire. Even if you start on the day payroll closes you still get paid for that pay cycle. Time to be a bother!!

Like kellybelly, if we have a new employee who works even 1 hour at the end of a 2 week payroll period, they get into the system to get paid. Our pay period closes on either Friday or Sunday (depending on location), and run payroll on Monday morning. There have been times I am entering the new employee right before I run payroll! (I do ask the managers NOT to hire on a weekend and usually they can, but there can be an emergency hire)
So in no way are you being unreasonable, they are!
