A little back ground: We live on a farm without any close neighbors, closest one is about a half mile away. A couple of years ago we adopted a dog from our local shelter, his name is Peanut and is a large dog. He was fine here for about a week and then one day he took off. I went driving around to find him and found him (as the crow flies) about 3/4 of a mile from our house at another house with two little boys. I got out of the car and got to talking to them and their great grandmother and it turns out that they were the ones that took him to the shelter. This house is the great grandmothers house. The boys were so excited to see him!! Since then, when Peanut hears the boys outside (which is mostly in the summer) he goes down there to visit and comes back a few hours later. The great grandmother babysits them quite often. I've spoken with the great grandmother and she is happy with the situation because she said he's a great dog and they only got rid of him because he got too big.
Last night around 7, DD#1 (17), DD#2 (14) and DS (6) and I were watching TV. Peanut comes running up on the porch and looks in the window. A second later, DD#2 says: there's a little boy on the porch! DD#1 says: whatever, you just want me to look. DD#2 says: really, there's a little boy on the porch!! I jump up and go outside and sure enough there is this little boy, barefoot, scratched up, dripping wet, dirty from head to toe and shaking like a leaf. It took me a minute to put it together but I realized this little boy was one of the ones Peanut goes to visit!! I've only seen these boys a couple of times and he never talked much other than to say hi. I tried to talk to him to make sure that's who he was and he would barely answer. He was on the verge of tears and just scared to death. When I asked him, he told me his name. I asked him how old he was and he said: 7, no 6. But he was much smaller than my small sized DS. We got him some water (he was hot and sweaty) he took a sip but gave the cup right back. I asked him if he just wanted to go home and he said yes.
DD and I get him in the car and take him home. I knock on the door and no one answered. The little boy turns the knob and walks in and then great grandma sees me. She looks a little confused, I think she thought I was coming to get Peanut. I said: I'm bringing him home, he was at my house. She pauses a minute and says: what? I said: (the little boys name) was at my house, he followed Peanut home. She yells at the little boy and said: well, he likes to run off. I asked how long she thought it was since she had seen him and that I was wondering how long it took for him to get to my house. She said: oh he was in here about 20 or 30 minutes ago. The other boy (who I think is about 9 or 10 and I think is the little boy's brother) said: no it's been more like an hour. She never even knew he was gone!!!! The little boy had to cross at least one creek to get to my house and we have had so much rain here that all the creeks are full. He walked about 3/4 of a mile and Peanut never left him. I'm so thankful that he made it to my house. This could have turned out so differently.
I decide to report it. I called the local non-emergency line and told the dispatcher what happened she said an officer would contact me. I got a call back from a state police dispatcher and she said they were sending an officer over to check on him. But that's the last I've heard from anyone. My question is, will they contact me further?
I have a feeling these people are SO mad at me but I couldn't just let it go. I'm keeping Peanut from going back down there, I just couldn't forgive myself if this happened again and the little boy gets lost or worse. Part of me wonders if I did the right thing but a much bigger part of me thinks I did.
