I recently opened a new checking account. The account is in my full legal name, but I go by a shortened version of my first name. Think "Thomas" being called "Tom."
I didn't think about it when I ordered checks and they arrived today. They're printed using my full legal name. If I sign the checks "Tom Smith" would that be acceptable or do I need to go to the trouble of having them reprinted?
I'm just frustrated with myself that I didn't even consider looking into this when I ordered the checks. *grrrr*

Did you sign the signature card Tom or Thomas? I would think that even though you like to be called Tom, you still need to sign your checks as Thomas.

But, businesses may not accept Tom as Thomas so your problem may not be with the bank but the person you are trying to give the check to. Save

I don't sign my full name ever even though my checks have it.
Then again, you can only read the first two letters of my name anyway

I have my official name on my checks and I sign it when I write checks or do any official business. I'm just so used to it that it doesn't bother me. So I would just write Thomas

I have my name listed on my checks, but I only sign first initial, last name. Never had a problem. As PP said, I think as long as you match signature card, you should be fine.

I work in banking although it has been many moons since I worked in accounts. From the banks standpoint your signature should match what's on the signature card regardless of how it's printed on your checks. I am "Thomas" who goes by "Tom" as well. I'm not sure what kind of scrutiny you'd get from a business accepting the check but I can't imagine you'd get a lot of pushback as long as you had ID.
ETA The bank is only looking at your signature if a problem comes up with your check or you are standing at a teller window getting cash.

Funny story about names on accounts. I remember when I first a teller we were encouraging our women customers to have their legal names on their accounts rather than Mrs. Husbandname Lastname. It was primarily our older clientele and some of them were very adamantly against it. From a young unmarried woman's standpoint it was very interesting. My own mother had always used her legal name but my grandmother was firmly in the Mr. Husbandname camp.
IRC the banks were pushing for the change because Mrs. Husbandname was not a legal name and their ID didn't match the account.

I have my full legal name printed on my checks but I sign them with my first initial of my nick name and full last name. I did not do this when I opened my bank account, the signature they have on file would be of my full legal name. I've never had any problems.

I sign first initial, middle initial, last name. Checks have full name. No problems. That said, my signature is so sloppy I doubt anyone could discern one letter from the next.

It only matters when you are face to face to a teller trying to get cash. I sign dh's checks all the time. I've even signed my name by mistake and it goes through. For my signature, I sign first initial and last name all connected. Not even close to what's on my signature card.

I write checks so infrequently that when I got married 3 1/2 years ago and changed my name I didn't bother ordering new checks. So my checks have my name as Kellee L____ and I sign them Kellee M____. I haven't had any problem at all. I really don't think that anyone looks at signatures unless there's a reason.
On another note, we are in the midst of purchasing a condo. I wrote out the check for part of the down payment when we signed the purchase agreement. The amount was $8950. I wrote the number correctly in the box but when I wrote out the number I wrote "eight thousand fifty" and not a single person questioned it and it was accepted and cashed for the correct amount. When dh pointed it out to me I was afraid it was going to cause a bump in the process but it didn't!

The few times I've signed a check at a business and have been questioned about my signature, I just show them that the way I sign is on my driver's license.
My dad taught me to have a really illegible signature so it would much less likely that someone could forge it.
My signature can be all over the place. My MS and stroke damage makes writing very difficult some days. Nobody ever questions my signature.
There even used to a website where a guy took photos of the funny ways he would sign credit card receipts.

My first and last names and both middle initials are on my checks to match my license. I most often sign first initial last name. No problems with businesses nor my banks.
My signature cards probably have beautiful first name, initials, last name. My signature is sloppier now.
I think it becomes a problem if there is potential fraud reported.

My full name is on my checks,, but I sign a shortened version. My first real adult job was working in a bank, back in the olden days. They go by what is on the signature cards. After having a check stolen and forged using the name on the check, I switched to a shortened version to easily prove that that is not my signature. However, I write very few checks these days, but it's habit now.

In all honesty, with ATM check deposits, I doubt anyone is checking the signature on most checks unless there is a fraud issue. As a person who has taken checks in fast food (back in the day), retail and now service industries, I can't say we every look at the signature.
That time I forgot to get paychecks signed and handed them out, 4 employees were able to cash/deposit checks that had no signature through ATMs!
So I am not sure it really matters as long as you know what your signature is and can prove it should there be fraud!

The signature that I use on checks isn't the same as what is printed on my checks and it also doesn't match the signature card that the bank has. They all know me really well at the bank so it all goes through.

I do t think anyone could distinguish my full name on checks vs how I actually sign the (a shorter abbreviated version)!
